It burned up. Cream yellow 911. So much for oil cooled engines

For a long time, Porsche used magnesium alloy for its engine blocks due to the weight advantage. A local firefighter told me years ago that because of this, Porsche engine fires were nearly impossible to put out, and that firefighters had to learn specifically how to deal with burning Porsches. Kind of a flash strip on wheels I guess.

Porsche 911s only had magnesium crankcases from 1970 to 1976, not a long time. However, any car that has a fuel leak can burn down is a short time.

BMW has used magnesium engine blocks for a long time. I have never seen one on fire though.

Correction 304014: According to Wikipedia's exact words:

"A Mercedes-Benz race model, the 300 SLR, had a body made from Elektron, a magnesium alloy, which ran (with successes) at Le Mans in 1955 (one was involved in the single worst accident in racing history, in terms of human casualties.) Porsche's all-out quest to reduce weight of their race cars led to use of magnesium frames in the 917/053 that won Le Mans in 1971.

Volkswagen has used magnesium in its engines for many years. FOR A LONG TIME, Porsche used magnesium alloy for its engine blocks due to the weight advantage. There is new interest in magnesium engine blocks, as featured in the 2006 BMW 325i and 330i models."

It would seem the Germans tend to use problematic metal alloys for their weight-saving properties.

Sad for the owner, and let's hope insurance pays enough to replace that sweet little 911.
