Finally a respectful post. You never know when it will be you begging the helicopter to go faster and save a loved ones life or your own. IMHO

I think the public should realize that not all helicopters landing at Cottage are for dire emergencies when one reads that someone with a broken leg is flown in after being rescued from a local mountain while hiking. Real life-saving flights, fine, broken ankles, no. I live close to Cottage, too, and think too many helicopters are landing for non-life saving events. But, money speaks, and helicopters cost a lot.

The sad part is I have heard of locals being turned away because of a helicopter landing. One woman was sent home to come back the next day for surgery because the emergency of the helicopter. She made it throught the night on pain killers until Cottage could get to her "emergency" surgery. Sad but true.

The Cottage website has a great helipad activity log to show you in terms of stroke/brain injury, trauma, and pediatric, what emergency came in and when ... http://www.cottagehealthsystem.org/tabid/1751/Default.aspx

Just an anecdote here. My husband was in a coma for about a month in 2004 at Cottage Hospital ICU. When he came back to the living, he did not make sense right away and he told me an incredible story. He asked if I had seen him and he pointed to the window. He said he was out there in a helicopter--upside down, mind you--cutting the tops of the trees across the street. I humored him, naturally, and then went to the nurses and asked asked if may have suffered brain damage while in the coma. They said this was not unusual and said not to worry. We laugh about it now. I wonder if he was having a premonition.
