Fantastic! It's only a matter of time before a child is hit going to school by a speeding car.

How is a Bike Path going Eastbound only going to help matters? What about the Westbound-ers? Put the money into road repairs, please!

After reading the article, it appears to me at least, that there will be two (2) bike lanes on the South side of Hollister: One a Class I, the other a Class II. On the North side of Hollister there will be Class II bike lane. What concerns me is Hollister will be reduced from four lanes to two lanes which will mean that the commuters heading home from work [going West on Hollister] in the evening will create quite a backup at the Hollister and Entrance Road stoplight.

This is great news! For those concerned about cars and direction, a class 1 bike path is completely separate from traffic and allows 2-way travel.

908, the class 1 bike path will facilitate both directions. 926, a sound concern. Isn't there already a bottleneck before the entrance road stoplight when the lanes merge anyway?

For those still confused... There will still be bike lanes in either direction ON hollister. Then, on the south side of hollister, there will be a completely separate 2-way bike path.

932 Yes, a Class 1 bikelane is completely separated from vehicular traffic except at intersections and driveways. Hollister is straight, so most of the collisions and near misses occur at the intersections and busy driveways, like at the 7-11 market or at Rancho Mobile Homes. We definitely need a bikepath, but I don't think THIS design improves safety at all because schoolchildren still have to cross the same busy driveways and intersections as they do now.

939 - Hollister continues as two lanes until Pebble Beach Dr. just before Ellwood Elementary. Hopefully the westbound turn lane for Entrance Rd. will be greatly elongated or there will be backup issues.

We've needed better bike lanes over there -- for school children and commuters -- for a long time. Intersecting with all the streets is a huge mistake for a class 1 bike lane though. If you were to go south of the houses, closer to the ocean, it would be a good class 1 bike lane. When you have that many intersecting streets, it should be a class 2 bike lane, and unfortunately, little kids are still going to have major issues, no matter which solution is chosen, due to the numerous intersecting streets on the SOUTH side of the road. [The NORTH side of Hollister has far fewer intersections and far less traffic.] I'm confused as to why this is the proposed solution?

094P -- Years ago there was a plan for a bikeway south of the houses. It ran from the park across from Ellwood School to the south end of the following streets: Santa Barbara Shores, Coronado, the bottom of the mobile home park, Ellwood Beach, and then connected to Phelps. This route has NO cars crossing it and seems far safer to me. It also is a much more pleasant route -- no exhaust fumes, no truck noise -- just pretty nasturtiums and trees. I don't understand why the city trashed the old route in favor of the one on Hollister.

094P here. I've been a part-time bike commuter and recreational bicyclist fighting for better bike paths in this town for close to 4 decades. I too do not understand why they did not use the route that has been on the books for decades -- the one that 958 is describing. Lots of us will go a bit out of our way to take a safer bike path, rather than use a dangerous one that's a bit shorter. There currently is NO safe way to get from the far western edge of Goleta into town. Many of us who live out here work in Goleta or at UCSB, and could and would bike commute if they'd build safer routes.

094P and everyone else, please communicate with the Goleta City Council -- they need to hear from everyone how well (or not) this is going to work. You can get their email addresses by going to the www dot cityofgoleta dot org website, point your mouse to "I Want To ..." then click on "Contact the City Council"
