This is how Santa Barbara is like a pinata..... 6 hooligans to beat up one single older male. That is so macho!

I used to live on Elizabeth Street. People would get their tires slashed, if that store owner caught them shoplifting. I couldn't wait to get the heck out of that neighborhood. And, Franklin School was terrible too. Low standard of academics, which I didn't realize until we switched schools.

Um, Roger, why would receipt of disability checks automatically result in unwanted stuff? I imagine a lot of disabled people - like one of our family members - will be paying bills, buying food, filling gas tanks, and hoping the puny amount lasts the month.

People get robbed of their money on the streets..Mostly homeless people get robbed after cashing their checks..Unwanted Stuff I was talking about is being robbed. HELL sometimes I don't even know what I'm talking about.

Agreed about the neighborhood! As for Franklin, it seems racist: the school and the "Adelante" are primarily Latino, yet the standards are very low, the kids not challenged as though the expectations are so low why bother? It probably has a good deal to do with the parents not getting involved with their school and demanding quality education. Because one is Hispanic/Latino, does NOT mean one can not excel. It's a real pity and contributes to the divisions so present in Santa Barbara.

574: Why did Madoff keep "needing" more? Different scale, same principle. Driving by yesterday I saw someone give money to the guy squatting at the Quinientos Trader Joe's exit. So long as people give handouts, there will be expectations and demands ...and needs - alcohol costs; more alcohol costs more.

You don't have to be labeled a racist to notice what goes on at Franklin School. It is a fact that the schools student population is 99% hispanic. The school provides more $ervice$ for their student body than any other school in the city- From aiding families in feeding, parent education, student tutors, preschool programs, summer programs, the list goes on and on... and yet the results are dismal and embarassing. Go figure.

@608 did you really just compare homeless people begging for change to Bernie Madoff??? Not the same principal at all, even if they get a disability check, or welfare, or a bed to sleep in once in a while. Roger, what percent of homeless people in your experience are getting disability checks and or welfare?

Gangs from other towns/cities are here, regardless of the day of the week. You all just think they're from SB because they're all, as you say, "hispanic". If you think "hispanic" gangs are bad, you're lucky not to live in Asian gang territory!

I could not put a figure on that Dilly Dally there are many though Not all panhandle but some do usually at the End of the month. But there are some who panhandle and get money too..They don't get enough money to rent a place or to even save..Unless of course they had a really good yob. Most checks are under 900.00 a month.

Situational Awareness and a good pair of running shoes helps. If those fail, then a license to carry would be nice :(
