Very cool the EMT's give the kids the teddy bears to help ease the scary scene & transport to the hospital.

This is a scary reminder to slow down, concentrate on the road, drive defensively and definitely put your kids in car seats. I'm relieved to know that no one was injured in that accident. I drove past it and it looked really awful. I've been worried sick ever since. Thank you to our fire, law enforcement and paramedics who helped these unfortunate people. I wish all of the people in the car a speedy recovery from the trauma of the accident. Let's hope, for the mom's sake that she wasn't a distracted driver, and that something else caused her to go off the road. That would be a lot of guilt to live with if her actions or inattentiveness was to blame. Thank you Edhat for the quick information and thank you urban hikers for sending in the story.

I wonder if she was texting... Most one car accidents seem to be due to distracted driving.

There are lots of reasons drivers divert their attention from the task of driving. Kids, for one. The radio, fatigue, a ringing cell phone, or simply just not paying attention are also possible.

That said, there might be another cause for this accident. Mechanical failures are infrequent, except -- when tires are bald. The risk of a blow-out skyrockets when tires are beyond their useable lifetime. I recall a frightening statistic: blow-outs double in the last 10% of tire life. Low inflation pressure magnifies this risk.

Everyone should check their tires and inflation pressure today -- before it's too late. I'm doing mine now.

This is very moving stuff. Glad to see everyone is OK.

While we're on the subject of texting, nearly every time I see someone driving poorly and/or about to run into me they're either on the phone or texting. By now everyone should know that's a no-no. No excuses.

Autos these days seem to end up on their roofs quite often when in an accident-----poor driver control or part of the 'new' safety design? It does make one wonder.....

At around 1 pm while on the way home from Montecito we passed the cleanup of this accident. The car was righted and looked totalled. Glad the family survived.

Glad everyone will be ok. Love the bears...and it appears the kids do too. A Ted can be so comforting at times like this. Way to go 1st responders!

841 - As a member of the Assistance League of S.B. may I say we give these bears to police, firemen, hospitals, etc. for just such occasions. Feels good to see them helping the kids.

Just happy to see that the teddys did the trick. Bet they will have a special place in their hearts for a long time to come. Yes, I know that the Assistance League provides these bears because I am a regular contributor to this organization. We can always use new contributors for anyone in the area who have things, time, or funds to contribute. Many thanks to all for a safe outcome for all parties involved.

Urban Hikers, Thank you for your contstant attention and keeping us informed. The photo of the firefighter w/the little girl and teddy bear could be printed and copies given to the fire station that responded and the Assistance League, both do a great job.

835:

That camry is a mid to late 90's model. Newer cars are often equipped with stability control, and rollovers are much less frequent.

I won't speculate as to why the crash happened, but I have to say good job to the mother for properly strapping her kids in. If she was driving distracted, I hope its a good lesson. If it was purely accident, glad everyone is okay.

Kudos to all the rescue personnel involved. Nothing like seeing an EMT or Fireman giving a teddy bear to a scared child at an accident scene. Thank God Mommy and children will be OK. Blessings to all.

The Care Bears come from the Santa Barbara Assistance League.....not the Jr. League.

I know two survivors of single-car accidents. One had a strange gust of wind come through the car (windows open) which blew something into her face; she says she remembers a magazine flapping, and squinting, and then nothing... she was in the hospital for months with broken parts, but was eventually mended. The other, my brother, was driving at night after a rainstorm, rounded a bend and just kept going around, never saw what happened, drove right off the road and slid down a hill, coming to rest against a tree, which saved his family. Only minor injuries there. These were both good, attentive drivers. No one should think they can't be distracted or an accident can't happen to them. That's why they call it an "accident."

Just so that you know that she was not texting! She was cut off by a turquis suv that merged into her lane without signaling. You need to watch out for people like that! Also the people that were driving the suv did not stop to see if she was okay. They are all fine, god was on her side

The other day I saw someone in a white 4-door sedan start to change lanes into the lane a motorcycle was in. The motorcyclist saw it, shifted the left hand side of the lane, and gave the woman several finger signals that I think adequately described what he thought of her driving.

The motorcyclist had a passenger sitting behind him. Both were wearing helmets and from what I remember appropriate motorcycle gear.

The women went back into her lane and slowed down. I had the feeling she was embarrassed about her mistake, because she drove very meekly for a long time. Glad no-one was hurt then.

Glad this family is SAFE. Wish the SUV driver had stopped. :P
