I cannot donate anymore as I am 75 years old and way under the weight limit now. But in the past I was a regular donor. I worked hard to get up to 110 pounds so I could give blood. But I could not give often because of the rules for how often one could give. Then the Tri Counties Blood Bank got the Pherisis machine for platelet donors. Then, if necessary,I could donate every three days. I was also on call for holidays and special surgeries. It takes longer than normal blood donating, but it was worth it to know I was saving lives. Years ago I started a Blood Bank for the Board of Realtors. I hope it is still being held regularly. One potential donor is alive because when given the prelim checkup, he was advised to go immediately to the hospital. The next day he had a triple bypass surgery. The life you save may be your own. I now have credit for 50 or more pints. And sorry that I cannot still be a donor. Please give.

Younger generations of donors need to be stepping up to the plate! So many now-seniors got into the habit because of serving in the armed forces during WWII and the Korean War. "Roll up your sleeve soldier!!" They knew that the life their blood might save could be that of their buddy. Now these service members are starting to time out, and we baby boomers and gen-Xers must step up and become regular donors. It is easy and almost pain free (if you can count a prick as being "pain"--most of us deal with joint and muscle pain already on a daily basis--this ain't nuthin!) You are given snacks and plenty of fluids while at the donor site, and can bank "points' toward rewards like movie passes, restaurant credits, music, clothing etc. Get into the regualr donation habit and give blood at least three times a year. Your community counts on it! ( I have about 20 units donated since the late 80's)

Thanks, Elder Donor Hero, for all your donations--you are awesome! Thanks too for your encouraging letter here. I've always found the process of donating to be uplifting, life-affirming and positive in every way. There were times in midlife when my iron levels were not high enough, but now I'm back to regular donations. I schedule online and it's easy-peasey when the bloodmobile comes to my burg. Besides donating, we can encourage friends and family to donate, write a letter to local publications about the experience, and get involved in saving lives. The more donating is discussed, the more it will become a mainstream activity of community involvement. It would be cool if we could organize Edhat Donation Days three times a year, and have Edhatters step up to help the different communities where we reside. What say, Ed?
