How lucky for your family! Seriously, you have a totally natural bug zapper in your eaves! Bats will earn their keep by eating insects by the thousands. It looks like a California Myotis or Western Pipistrelle, but it's hard to tell without scale or a closer view of the ears and face.

For excellent info, refer to the Oct. 28, 2008 SB Independent article "Don't be Bat-Freaked on Halloween" (Please google it, I can't post the link) part 1 & 2 or contact local bat expert Paul Collins at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

If you really don't want bats in your eaves, you could install a simple bat box nearby and hope it prefers the box. Don't handle it or allow pets to as bats (like all wild animals) can carry rabies. Keep the guano hosed off the porch and you should be good to go to let it stay.

I used to stand motionless on the lawn in Montecito at night, attracting mosquitoes. The bats would flutter and swoop right by me devouring the bugs that would devour me. Great fun with nature!
Roger- Smart & Final sells stainless steel scrub pads that are made of thick stainless. Doesn't rust and very tough on rat teeth. Stuff it in all cracks and opening bigger than 1/2" dia.

Bats sleep during the day.... try reflecting sunlight up into the bat's eave frequently during the day and see if it will seek another eave that is more convenient for you, like not the one you share with your front door.

We have mostlyMexican Brown Bats around here - harmless and good insect catchers. However - several years ago I had upwards of 75 living in my attic. Contractor came and waited until they all left at dark, then put up small but sturdy metal ascreening under all the eaves. Took awhile to get rid of them all because they kept picking at the creens and getting back in but after a couple of years, they finally left. I agree that putting up a bat box near your house might provide them with a new home.

I miss the bats. Watched them at twilight over Isla Vista streets and Goleta's. Where have our common neighbors gone? I vote for leaving her/him be, and adding to the bat pop. with a bat box or two.

I've lived here all my life and have never seen one. I'd say you are lucky.

When I was a kid there used to be flocks of bats at twilight. Not anymore. What a shame.

This bat looks part pug. If that thing lived near me, I would flee.

It's cute, you should be unafraid of it. It only wants your insects. Too bad bats have been given a bad rap. Hope you go with the bat box idea. Good luck!

Get animal control immediately! And pray the bat is not found rapid as so many around here are. IF the bat is rabid you will be forced to undergo rabies shots. Large needles, don't play around with this creature, all nature lovers notwithstanding. You are NOT lucky. What they don't know will kill them.

I looks like you have stucco around the doorway and that gives bats something to grip as they sleep. If you want them to move to another location you need to cover the stucco with plastic such as painting plastic drop cloth material. Cut it to size and staple or duct tape it in place for several weeks and they will get the idea and move. Once they have the message you can remove it and it's likely they will not come back. The guano needs to be hosed away, not swept away to prevent breathing germs. Our exterminator was unable to help and all the flashing lights, noise and pushing them with brooms did nothing until we put up plastic. Ugly, but better than bat poop all over the doorway.

789: No need to spread unfounded hysteria. If the bat was rabid it wouldn't be resting peacefully. Never pick up a wild animal -- rabid or not. Don't bother it and it won't bother you. OP: Be thankful that your habitat is welcoming to fellow creatures. DO NOT CALL AN EXTERMINATOR.

Wow how lucky to Have a Live-in Bug Catcher.

"302650" If you go down to the Harbor at Twilight you can watch the Bats swooping around picking Bugs out of the Sky its neat to so how quickly they can change direction in midflight.
