I'm so sad that there wasn't another option to help the sea lion :(

They let her suffer a few days before they put her down...Nice Santa Barbara!

I don't see why someone had to intervene in the circle of life in this case. yes, I feel bad for the sea lion but why wasn't this animal allowed to die naturally and become food for scavengers? I really don't see a need to waste resources here.

and they just stole a meal from some other hungry animal.

I hope they used something so they could return the body to the sea. it would save another seal for awhile. Glad they caught it.....no more hunger no more pain!

We intervene in the circle of life as it relates to humans. Why not all creatures? It's called compassion. Most people prefer they not suffer in agony. Peter acted as than any other animal rescue organization would have for dogs, cats, or wildlife.

259 I was thinking the same thing. This was not a pet it was a wild animal. Guess what in the wild some animals die. They took away her chance to fight through infection, which by the way wild animals do, and if she died for her body to become life sustaining food for other sea dwelling creatures. Humans need to stay out of it and let nature take its course.

Just another point of view; probably a pretty disturbing image for small children (o.k. me too) to see an animal suffering like that. I get the CoL - just saying.

I'm with 259. nobody likes to see a maimed Sea Lion, but, guess what, this happens all the time in the wild. you think you're doing good, but you're actually doing worse for the natural order of things.

now, if the Sea Lion was maimed by something like a boat or likewise not part of nature, it would then make sense to intervene.

It's sad but I also share 259's opinion, and agree with 271 and 275 that we as humans seem to intervene when it affects us in some emotional way.

Maybe the City wanted it captured as not appealing to tourists or they may have thought it certainly draws media attention to the fact we have Great Whites locally (not exactly a tourist magnet). Just like most of our crime not being reported, it could be due to our tourist industry. Just a thought.

There's the animal's suffering, but a bigger reason for ending it is so we don't have great white bait trolling the area. We intervene in nature all the time and possibly saving some swimmer, surfer or kayaker is ample reason for this act of mercy. Might there be other considerations involved in the decision, or can we be confident that Edhat armchair opinion is the last word?

My guess would be that they thought they could help her, but after examining her more closely, realized she couldn't be saved. For those of you who think we intervene too much, I'm guessing you don't spend much time on our local beaches. Trust me - tons of dead stuff everywhere, especially sea lions. Nature has more than enough death to go around, and we all help her with that quite a bit too.

I think another reason why they made an effort to better examine those wounds was to confirm what really got her - I think a lot of people want to know if they're really out there swimming with jaws.

There's an old surf movie from the 60s that showed a very large shark cruising the lineup at Rincon.

Fernald Point is also known as Sharks Cove and/or Sharky's due to the preponderance of sharks attracted to that location in the 1860s by local cattle operations.

Great Whites have killed divers out at the islands and small ones have been caught off Goleta Pier (and Stern's Wharf if I'm not mistaken).

A large Great White was observed attacking and I believe killing a sea lion between Carp State Beach and Rincon a few years back.

Sharks are out there and we share the water with them every time we go in the ocean. They are very good at eating their intended prey and only vary rarely attack humans. We're at much great danger driving to the beach.

Implying that Peter Howarth would euthanize an animal due to the city's aesthetic/tourist concerns is bull poop. We don't know the whole story. His resources are always stretched thin. He knows his stuff. And he IS marine mammal rescue. Just ask him and ART/Julia what it takes to get permitted.

I agree with all who consider this the cycle of life, but not leaving her out there as shark bait may be a good point.

And know that Marine Mammal rescue has saved dozens, maybe hundreds of animals, especially during domoic acid poisoning seasons.

I am shocked at the implication that Peter Howorth and the Marine Mammal Center did not do the best for this unfortunate creature.

Change places a second: another animal, a human, gets bitten and is suffering, is alive but seriously hurting. Would you not try to help, to save him or her or would you say, "let nature take its course"? ...Same for this creature.

Until you walk in their shoes, you who criticize should volunteer to work with the MMC or the Wildlife Care Network or ART, then please refrain from criticizing the educated and often very emotionally draining work that they do. No one, especially those who work with non-human creatures, likes to put one down, but sometimes that is the very kindest thing to do.

Ok so I hear the Harbor Patrol goes out and finds the thing. Shuttles poacher Pete out to get the thing. And what thanks do the citizens of SB get for funding the Harbor Patrol? Hey Pete. Your welcome.
