So they need money badly enough to charge a fee to park at our beaches, yet they just gave the Miramar developer millions of dollars in special tax breaks? This really smells.

BURNTTHISTLE, look on page 11 and 13 of the Agenda where tiered fees, for Hendy's Beach, projected reduction of # of parking stalls is 34%, and 49% for flat fee.

This is a beach access issue , and the public loses if this bad proposal is passed by the supervisors. Think about it . What are the two last remaining public beaches between Isla Vista and Leadbetter / West Beach ? The answer would be Goleta and Hendry's. So now , all the beachgoers between Goleta and Santa Barbara will be forced to either pay this fee or travel many miles further , putting more pressure on the few remaining free beaches. When did our beach access rights become a commodity for the county to selll back to us ? Please email all the supervisors ( addresses can be found @ the S.B. County website) and by all means take a little time out of your day on August 16 to attend and speak at the next hearing.

wonder what the connection is between the proposed "vendor" and commissioner(s) and/or staff.... and I further wonder if the proposed "vendor" has a 310 area code.

Thank you for the information about the beach fees meeting and including contact information. I immediately sent a letter and plan on attending the next meeting. Apart from being completely annoying, imposing beach fees would change the aesthetics of our beaches. I'm not sure how they are going to collect fees, but whatever is installed will change the dynamics of our beaches. We live in a beautiful town and it takes money to keep it looking this way, but there has to be another way. I love Hendry's beach. It is already impossible to park there because of the Boathouse. The Boathouse has almost ruined the Hendry's experience. I can't imagine more parking spaces being taken away.

If the money goes to the general fund every person that goes to these beaches as well as the rest of the local community needs to show they are against this. To give a blatant lie as a reason for these new fees is disgusting even for politicians. Why not just say the state took away our RDA and we can't stop funding our pet projects so we are going to make up new fees. At least that would be honest.

It could be structured so the money went to the beaches or specific beaches, but it is not. As is the money goes to the general fund, which is the only reason they are looking at it.

Burntthistle, good point. It could be structured in such a way that a percentage of the revenue from each park goes to activities that benefit all the beaches and that a percent goes to that specific beach. But using it for the general fund or to bankroll someones pet project would be a slap in the face.

Burntthistle is there anything that states it has to stay in the parks department? If it goes to the general fund the parks budget problem will not be solved anyway.

Just went to Park Commission Agenda and their was no mention in their report of a 34% loss of parking spaces. Dillydally, it would be great to keep all the revenues at each particular park but this would not solve the park dept. buget problem. There are many county parks and many of the rangers actually work work at multiple parks shuffleing around as needed. Every one interested in all of this should go to the SB county website and go to the SB Parks Commission agenda for July 26.

Thank you very much for sharing your notes, esp. who to contact with comments. Was the survey discussed? I'm curious how many have taken it, and what percentage is opposed?

Charging a fee at Ocean Park, just outside of Lompoc, is ludicrous. Beach access from this park is closed for plover season, the park area is rarely used and Surf Beach (owned by Vandenberg AFB) is a half mile away. An attempt at charging or enforcing a fee would signal the death knell for what little use it sees.

The general concept is not uniformly bad, but your notes from this meeting confirm that the current plan is a massive con. Here would be acceptable terms: -If the rates were on par with city lots -All money collected is spent at the beach generating the revenue. -Annual permits effective at all 7 beaches available (with a nice discount for those who have a local zip code) These beaches could all use more supervision and up keep. If parking was a way to achieve that and the above criteria were met it could be a successful program. If the program doesn't take these into account then keep parking FREE!

Why would they have to eliminate 34% of the spaces. Is this info from the comentator or the park commission? It seems like a lot. I guess the big problem with park revenues are that they are spread out to all the county parks and so self motivated citizens would need to clean trash all over. Many park employees have been laid off. They are short staffed. Someone has to find more revenue. Do you have a better idea?

In reference to Hendry's beach; it is now one of the cleanest beaches around. Every day myself and other anonymous, self-motivated citizens clean the trash from this beach. It is a locals beach and many of us have no extra $ for parking. If parking fees are instigated, I for one will not be cleaning it up and the fees will not clean it up. It will be a mess again, a pay to park mess.

There was a pay it yourself system at East Beach last time I parked there. Is this what they are proposing? or ?
