With all due respect, THIS is what's wrong with Santa Barbara.

"this is what's wrong with Santa Barbara"? Please enlighten this ignorant soul as to what this proclamation, bestowed from an obviously lofty throne, exactly means?

Did I miss something? What is pretentious about a restaurant dinner with wines?

This was in fact a GREAT evening. I have no idea what the first two comments are referencing. Last time I checked, wine grapes are one of the top crops in SB County & this dinner was celebrating a down-to-earth SB-born winemaker who works 2 other jobs so that he can pursue his dream using a local crop. This is indeed what makes Santa Barbara great, & one reason why I love living here.

497, do you say the same about people who spend money on hobbies like sailing, horseback riding, motorcycling, mountain biking, or traveling, just to give a few examples of hobbies that can be quite expensive? Food is a hobby of mine. I'd spend $$ on eating out and drinking wine if I had any. Should enthusiasts of other hobbies spend their time and money on building the tools of their fun? Build their own bikes and boats? And we'll have to outlaw custom parts on bikes; get rid of all that aftermarket chrome. Must those who enjoy wine grow their own grapes and make their own? And raise and process their own meat? Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just a little unrealistic for most of us.

I also don't understand what the first comments have a problem with. What about this is wrong with Santa Barbara? Maybe I'm missing something.

I think the first two comments are referring to the boasting about what a great evening it was but then the author seemed to blast most of the wines? Winemaker dinners are usually a lot of fun. I haven't been in years. I'd like to see them a bit more affordable though.

RE: 724, while I agree many winemaker dinners can be pricey, I believe the Max's Cucina series (formerly held at SpiritLand Bistro) is very reasonable. For $50 plus tax/tip, you have a nice four-course meal & get to taste 40-50+ wines (depending upon how many people attend). Each couple contributes one (or more if desired) bottles of wine. There are many regulars who return month after month who carefully watch their outgoing cash flow, but have so much fun that this is a great monthly treat/present for themselves. I hope you will try it at least once when your favorite varietal is being featured.
