Considering how many public tax dollars are spent protecting these few private properties known to be in harms way, two things come to mind. Charge the private property owners for any and all future emergency services that protects their land. Or, tell them they might have to move out, because they are no longer going to be rescued in the case of known and predictable natural disasters.. No need to buy this land or offer them any compensation. They bought land that had known and obvious hazards and have no right to demand we pay them for their own error in judgement now.

Good gracious, what a comment!!! Just give up their homes and do what?? Probably weren't bought yesterday, could have been in family for generations, or have old folks there who bought when they were young. Your argument could be used for earthquakes, our whole area is threatened by the San Andres fault, "We won't help you if we have a major earthquake, you knew when you bought it was a threat, just move away and leave your home."

Ahhh, the continued smugness of those who love to spend other people's money creating the perfect nanny-state on planet earth right here in Santa Barbara.
