Moved from Goleta to Denver a few months ago... I really appreciate the compassion from my hometown. Thank you!

This serial killing tragedy could happen on a daily basis and still we as a country would lack the resolve to solve this problem. Two days from now, this incident will just become yesterday's news, unless you are a victim or a victim's family member. McDonald's Massacre at San Ysidro (21 dead); Virginia Tech Massacre (32 dead) Kileen Massacre (23 dead). Columbine. Denver. What's going to make this phenomenon stop?

I believe that the City of Goleta is compassionate, however, the bottom line is that this country is sorely lacking in gun control laws. All one has to do is check statistics and compare us to other countries. Shameful.

What about all the people killed on the streets of Chicago every day? Why is one death deserving of national attention and others not. Serious question.

Gun control laws won't keep crazy people from being crazy. He had plenty of bombs in his apartment and could have easily used a bomb in the movie theater instead of a gun. I agree there's a bigger issue at hand... I'm not convinced gun control will help.

Guns killed 28,000 people last year. However, they prevented over 1,000,000 robberies. We don't need any gun control. Yes, they can kill, but they can also protect. As 863 said, people are just crazy and they'll find any way to kill.

There are very few times when the flag is to be flown at half mast. Death of a current or former President. Death of a current or former Vice President. Death of the Speaker of the House. Death of a Secretary (Secretary of State, for example). Death of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Death of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Death of a member of Congress Death of a state governor. The morning of Memorial Day. I think that about covers it, tho there are a few holidays that traditionally receive an annual Presidential Proclamation. This isn't one of those. It could be with a presidential proclamation but I haven't heard anything about that.

My bad. I see such a proclamation was made.

I agree with 911. This was sad, but this does not compare with firefighters or police officers that die in their service. When one dies the flags of the stations are lowered. This flag lowering is nothing more than feel good/bad politics.

Someone reads the Chicago Tribune online all those shootings..This is considered a mass murder not a serial murder. Serial is like the guy LAPD is looking for from Santa Barbara who's sticking homeless people and leaving a note. Mass is when some one kills alot of people at one time.

So we mourn "officially" only when people are killed in mass quantities? Odd. Seems like it celebrates these events in a perverse way rather than abhoring them, along with all the others. Stinks of exploitation actually.

agree with 911 and 931, this is not an event that warrants a half staff by a small town 1500 miles away... I see total disregard for honoring the flag all around town - sometimes its upside down, sometimes its not taken down at night, sometimes its left in tatters and rips... Sometimes there is a Mexican flag flown beneath...

When people trade their freedoms for security...the outcome is that they lose both....don't be so quick to give away our Second Ammendment Rights! Be strong...be free!

@299907 1M? That's a funny claim. Apparently people need to make stuff up in order to argue against gun control. The fact is that the U.S. has vastly more gun deaths than do civilized nations.

US law and military tradition reserve usage of term "half-mast" to refer to ships and other ocean-going vessels. The term "half-staff" is what is used when on land. This makes sense, as no one calls a flag pole a mast. Otherwise, wouldn't it be "Flagmast, Arizona?" Also: gun-control is a no-brainer.

Why complain about it being half-staff for strangers who live far away? Go with me here... no one is hurt by having the flags at half-staff. It may help some commemorate but it can't hurt anyone.

Every day someone dies - should they not also be honored with a half-staff?
