I wish the byline would have read "affordable seniors housing" or something like that. She has a good idea and has found a place and way to help may people who need it.

I was relieved to read that this article wasn't about creating more affordable housing in SB for welfare recipients/section 8/non-locals.

I had the same reaction as the previous commentors. Normally not for AH but this seems like a good idea. We are going to have lots of baby boomers retiring on fixed incomes in the next few years.

Wow...I so expected yet another downtown complex being taken off the tax rolls and handed over to some out of towner losers. Nice to see someone with the means doing good for our community rather than waiting on Government to do it for them.

All housing is affordable. That is the concept of free markets - willing buyer and a willing seller. If it sells, it is affordable to that particular buyer. Government-mandated subsidized or price-fixed housing is the more accurate term.

Not that this is a bad idea, I think it's great but the Chumash do much worse than this. Senior housing is a great idea.

Went to the hearing at the planning commission. This project in the Valley is more like a hospital than traditional "housing". Seniors will be crammed into an institutional setting. The developers are looking to greatly increase what was the zoning for the parcel, from single family neighborhood to very dense institutional. There will also be nursing, aide and custodial staff and their families crammed onto the site (includes a play ground). People are swooning over out of towner Rona Barret, who must be an investor in this development (any one know for sure?) These types of institutional housing projects bring lots of traffic, sewage, water and utilities usage due to the extreme density and employees and visitors coming to and fro Really glad I am not a neighbor of this one.

What does Rona Barret being an "out of towner" mean? Has she moved from the Santa Ynez Valley where she's lived for many years? Ms. Barret has been a caring citizen, involved in our community, especially with the elderly.

Oh great. Affordable housing in Santa Barbara County = Every open space left in Orcutt paved over. Even though you can get a house for ~200k and a condo for much less. What does $200,000 get you down in South County? Exactly.

It's a good project. It's preparation for an inevitable flood or tsunami of aging baby boomers. The stuff is really going to hit the fan. both old age and dementia -- there are going to be a lot of seniors to take care of and many will outlive their savings and retirement.
