I live near Brandon but didn't hear anything. What's interesting is that whenever a question like this is asked on Edhat, people always answer that it was either fireworks or a car backfiring. Several years ago my husband and I heard what sounded like fireworks in our cul-de-sac, immediately followed by a car pulling away. Since there are families in our neighborhood who shoot off fireworks, we didn't think anything of it. Imagine my surprise when a sheriff showed up at my door a few days later, asking if I had any information about the shooting on our street. Just goes to show you, it's not always fireworks or cars backfiring!

Edhatters don't know everything all the time and this is one of those times you'd in the prime position to let us know what we're missing.

Thanks, 560P. I wish more folks were like you and thought about their answers before posting them.

My friend, Kilroy*, was there and said that a bunch of gang-bangers were riding in a car that backfired once. Then they threw three firecrackers out the window and fired two gunshots at a street sign.** * Four you youngsters - look it up. ** Attempt at humor.

Just chiming in - I heard 5 bangs (could have been fire works, but sounded like shots fired to me, given the succession - 3 evenly fired shots, followed a second later by two more) early this morning in the SBCH neighborhood.

715: SBCH meaning Cottage? Yes! Scared the scrap out of me from a dead sleep, so I couldn't evaluate it well. It was bad enough that I got up. I did smell what seemed like firecracker smoke. I saw no police; heard no sirens. When I looked at clock it was 4:08 a.m. so it happened around 4:00. I'll agree with firecrackers. I haven't shot much, and not in decades. Does one smell gunpowder if a gun is fired within a half-block of one's dwelling?
