When are the Power Companies in the United States, particularly, Southern California, going to place all these above ground high voltage lines UNDERGROUND! We are like a third world country! All of the EU has their lines UNDERGROUND. Imagine all the savings in fires due to lines down, or trees in the winter blowing lines down...WTF? Are we in 2012???

We can't afford it. Our money is going for unneeded wars. Peaceful countries have better infrastructures.

And these same "peaceful" countries Shorebird speaks of have an area and population that is a tiny fraction of ours.

The majority of EU Countries have not undergrounded their utilities beyond 50%,and it may be only two of them who have completely undergrounded theirs. Europe had a advantage with most of theirs being rebuilt after the war, while a goodly portion of the US infrastructure was built prior however lets not let the truth get in the way of opinion.

After the painted cave fire a good portion of our neighborhood opted to underground the utilities. But we had to cover the cost. SCE does not pay to put their utilities underground. It is the property owners responsibility. It 1991 it was 10,000 per house on our road of 16 homes. It was well worth it. No poles and no outages. I can't imagine how much it would cost today.

In the City of Santa Barbara, there is a tax on the electric bill for undergrounding the power lines. Unfortunately, one of the previous City Councils hijacked the monies into the general fund. The question is, when will the City start undergrounding power lines again?

It doesn't matter where the lines are located, you are still going to have problems. Look at downtown for example. How many underground transformers have blown or started on fire in the past 6 months?

 DILLYDALLY helpful negative off topic

492P I heard the same cost a few years ago from a RE agent. Everything else he said was above board so I am sure he believed it to cost $10,000 today.

610P Your ten year old probably has a pretty skewed perception of what government spending is like, since chances are you're the one explaining it to them. Do you mention that we have a defense budget larger than the next 20-odd countries combined? That our two costly (and unnecessary) overseas wars have cost us over a trillion dollars in actual moneys, not to mention the cost of human suffering at home (in the form of our veterans and their rehabilitation into society) and abroad?

I'm not saying this government (local, state, federal) doesn't spend a lot of money on welfare. But to act like it doesn't spend an extraordinary amount of money on its military and war potential is...kind of untrue.

Why should the customers have to pay the utility companies to upgrade to the 21st century? They make BILLIONS in profits each year. You would think they would see the overall reduced costs of underground utilities (liability and reduction of linemen, miles of wiring and upkeep)
