This was probably what we heard last night! Even though we live in the flight path, this one was noisier than usual, and we were trying to figure out what they were. Mystery solved!

I think the propellers actually rotate to act like a helicopter for landing. Just a guess. Can someone confirm? Yes they (2) flew over last evening and were louder than a normal airplane or helicopter.

Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, maybe from Mugu? I've seen them doing practice approaches, but don't think they land here often. Maybe a malfunction, or they got permission to dine at the Ebar?

One (at least) flew over my house too; they are noisy, but interesting.

It'd make a great mulcher with the prop in those positions. Need a side job fellas?

Anyone know if they are still at the airport at 2pm on Friday. Would like to go by and see them. They do take off like a helicopter. Once up in the air, the nacelles rotate, transforming the Osprey into more of a conventional plane. The Osprey did have some teething problems (crashes) early on, but the issues appear to have been resolved. One of the possible advantages and why some of the Armed Services like this plane, is that it can carry a lot of gear as compared to a helicopter, and is faster than a helicopter - reducing exposure to enemy fire.

They left Thurs. morning or Wed. evening. Also fun are the Harrier jets. The times I've seen them take off from SBA, they used what seemed like a few hundred feet of runway.
