With Cox I lower my expectations and expect increases in my bill due to their quasi - monopoly situation. My internet access cost is high and my elderly Mom who lives alone loves the Animal Planet , TCM channel, and Baby programs, but finds the cost for this service extremely high.

I've had issues over the last 2 weeks. I keep having to reset my internet, anywhere from 1-3 times per day.

Is it the actual speed or the DNS queries? If DNS, try switching to OpenDNS.

Cox DNS is not that great. For DNS I either use Googles or Verizon. Both respond smoking fast. Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 Verizon: 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 Try those out in your DNS settings and see if your response times improve. You could also just be experiencing congestion on your Cable service. Don't forget that the more people in your neighborhood that get online and start streaming movies, etc., the slower your Cable will go. It's a shared medium, unlike DSL.

I have been having problems with Cox for a week. Super slow and I have to keep unplugging the modem and router to re set. Yesterday i had no Internet for most of the day. Cox hasn't ever been this slow before.

It's too bad that Santa Barbara city council won't let Verizon bring in fiber optic links (FiOS). The COX monopoly needs to be broken. It would be like a super-fast DSL, faster than cable-- mainly limited by modem speeds. We could then stream to our hearts content in HD. Just like on the national level, the politicians have been bought off.

I'm having the same problems and gotten the same message from Cox. "We don't see any problems, nothing is wrong with your modem." Blah blah blah.

I am having the same problems in the same time frame in downtown SB. I have my Kindle attached to my wireless network too. It also is slow. Two devices both slow so Cox admits it's the internet connection and not my up-todate Mac computer. They ran the remote test from their end and said everything was okay. It took two hours to download two MP3 albums of music. S-l-o-o-o-w. The speed test confirmed slow too. Cox is coming out tomorrow to check. I'm not optimistic that they will find anything.

I don't have any trouble, but I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with them negotiating a lower bill? My introductory period is over and I'm really not looking forward to paying their "regular" price.

Just a note to those suggesting using another DNS provider. Please keep in mind that if you choose to switch you DNS you will no longer get the messages from COX when there is an issue (for instance you bill is late). They use DNS to force those messages through to you. Otherwise you might run into a situation where your internet simply doesn't work and you have no idea why.

@193 - They also send you an email to notify of those items and when there is an 'issue' other than your bill, like your service is down...how do you expect to get those messages then? Also, the idea of being routed through a 'big brother' type DNS server where they are forcing splash pages on you doesn't seem right in the first place. I use other DNS servers and have never had an issue. And of course Cox is going to slow down in the afternoons. More people in your neighborhood are using it. It's the nature of Cable internet service. Take that in to account the continually increasing load on their backbone with all the new "connected' devices, smart phones, streaming services, etc. and your Cable isn't going to be getting faster until they bring in more bandwidth.

299074: Cox should have sufficient bandwidth to accomodate Cox customers without having all of these customers experiencing slow internet speed. I've had same problems as everyone above - had time-out problem paying my Cox bill online - hahaha. I have Cox phone, and I'm cancelling today if possible because they keep turning off my call history, although I've told them not to 5 times in the past. It's ironic that they ask for permission to access an account while they continue to make unauthorized changes like this. After my phone was installed I lost internet and went thru the tech support runaround, was told my modem was bad. After 2 weeks a repair person found it was a bad splitter installed by Cox. I don't know how a splitter can become inop, but replacing it worked.

193: I'm not sure you understand what DNS is and how it works. It would make no sense for Cox to "use DNS" to tell you your bill was late. DNS means Domain Name System and is the internet number to name directory. Cox's DNS servers suck. Use the OpenDNS servers or some others that are correctly configured and more reliable. Many people in town who have had "slow Cox service" issues have resolved them by switching their DNS settings.

Cox automatically increases the bill every March. I'm 77 on a tight fixed budget and I complained...they are delayig the increase for 6 months. If more customer's complained instead of complacently accepting the automatic increases....maybe...it would help?

Been having the same intermittent problems out here in the goodland. What gets me is the amount of marketing material crap from cox we have to put up with everyday stuffed into the mailbox and through email. Maybe if they took a portion of their bloated marketing budget and applied it to their infrastructure and pricing, we wouldn't have to endure their rapidly ascending fees and shoddy service.
