"...spared from some of the abysmal treatment..." Really...when the goal is to take this pig, blow its brains out with an air-powered stun gun, string it up in chains, and then slit its throat until it bleeds out and dies, why are we so concerned with how it is treated up until that point? It's the ultimate in hypocrisy.

Let's get down to brass tacks. Will this improve the flavor of my bacon?

This is great. Thank you for your work in bringing farming back to the basics. I say until all the previous commenotrs can kill and dress their own pigs that you all get broccli only. Amazing how out of touch so many Americans are with where there food comes from. Air powered stun guns and slit throats? you obviously have never been to a pig farm.

Kudos to CKE for humane treatment of animals. Food quality in fact is improved by humane treatment, and society benefits from respecting the value of life.

298942 - You obviously no nothing about how 99% of pigs are slaughtered. A whack in the head and a slit throat is EXACTLY how they are killed. Oh, and a few weeks before they get the business the boars get their cojones sliced off. All true. But I guess we all like to digress....

912, Same reason we provide food, shelter, healthcare, etc. to death row inmates - it's humane. Maybe the end outcome is not, but how is that an excuse for YEARS of mistreatment?

If it costs the same to treat pigs, cows, chickens, etc. "humanely" before bashing their heads in, exsanguinating them, slicing them up, and grilling them, then I say fine. And if the quality of meat is better coming from a "humanely" treated animal, then that has value too. But if the costs skyrocket because the pig/cow/chicken farmer has to let his animals run free in a meadow on a daily basis, then I'll take less expensive, caged animal bacon/steak/McNuggets.

912- wouldn't you rather live 50 years in Santa Barbara, than live 65 years in a prison cell in Guatemala?

I try to limit meat intake so as not to further feed the market with demand for cheap meat (mass farmed cattle, chickens, pigs, fish, etc.) The whole reason they are treated poorly is due to the excess with which we consume meat. Vegetarianism is great, but I feel eating GOOD meat on occassion is not a bad thing, as we are technically omnivores. I also feel that if you are going to kill an animal to eat it, that it not be considered a faceless product that was never thought to even have an existence. Mechanization of the industry takes the levity out of the situation and desensitizes people to what they are actually consuming. Please show some respect for the animal that gave its life so that you could eat, whether it be for survival, or to stuff your face (what the trend seems to be).

920... actually it does improve the taste of the "bacon". Chipotle noted that the pork in their carnitas tasted .... "weak", to put it kindly.... and they chose to switch to pasture raised pigs for their pork. It costs more but improving the quality of fast food justifies $1 more at the cash register. Kudos to the pioneers in the fast food industry to improve the conditions of the animal breeding farms that supply their restaurants in an effort to improve the products they sell.

We pay more for organic free-range meat and just eat it less often. The difference in taste is remarkable!! At the Farmers Market; beef from Rancho San Julian (Lompoc), pastured cattle slaughtered on the ranch. Jiminez Farms (Santa Ynez) has pork and chicken to die for; Lily's Eggs (Santa Paula), free-range chickens for eggs and meat. As an old TV ad used to say, "Try it, you'll like it."
