Great reporting Roger, as always. We need someone who will 'tell it like it is' instead of putting a spin on the facts for their own advertisement---thank you!

Thankyou so much for this perspective. Ditto on everything. As far as the shelter goes, When government is involved, and waiting for their next taxpayer handout... Nothing gets done, but the situation definitely gets worse. Much worse. God save the Queen, hee hee.

I had lunch with my family at Habit on State recently. Pretty uncomfortable on account of the street people who control the sidewalk there. I like Habit, but left thinking I'm not doing that again. Pretty unappetizing. But, man! Scooping poop off your front porch?! That is truly revolting.

First Hand - Great job Rog - as this debate goes on till we come to some rational solution - I go to the Habit in that area and that is it.

Roger: Your excellent article should be REQUIRED READING for the misguided loons at City Hall who seem to regard the vagrants as an endangered species. I didn't say "homeless," because the homeless are a different group entirely from the drug-addled, criminal derelicts who have pretty much single-handedly destroyed the neighborhood that Casa Esperanza infests.

Great job Roger and that's just your dealings with them !! Think of all the stores and people that live around there, all there stories and the hell they have gone through !! Then there's some of the homeless that really need help but are kicked out because another homeless person is in charge of sign in dosn't like them and that person ends out getting raped or killed on the beach, or burns to death one block from the shelter !!! The way it's run needs to change !!!

Amen Rex, and other commenters. The shelter and its management are ruining the area, and don't care about the surrounding neighbors. They never have. I appreciate the insight about the plight of individual homeless who have been kicked out, struggled, and even died from mismanagement of that shelter. I see the same guys on the streets for 10 years, and a never-ending crop of new faces staying at the shelter. They're not from here, and don't care about our neighborhood or city. The local homeless can't get a bed because the shelter caters to these new arrivals. Who is the shelter for, then, if not our own homeless?

Thank You everyone believe it or not I didn't share everything just what was on my mind I remembered more after I finished. Shakey was there. He worked in the neighborHOOD over 30 years. Next door is an empty store front been that way well over a year. The neighbors have had their share of vandlism, campers, urinators, poopalaters, drinkers, even one man that cornered a female neighbor in the laundry room..There used to be alot of graffiti on the back wall of the nail salon. There is a stain on the porch that has been urinated over so much I think it changed color. The shelter is not a good neighbor.

One of my neighbors told me that yeasterday someone came by from the shelter and dropped off a bunch of paperwork. The paperwork had some information about calling the shelter when we have a problem on the proptery. Wasn't there a meeting to do that a year or so ago maybe longer? I will call the police if I have a problem like I said before I was all for the shelter in the beginning but I have seen nothing but corruption since the place opened. The first manager was really bad too I personaly expect some type of "Payback" for my commentary but I am unafraid of that scrap. What happened to that old woman did that to me..How could someone treat the elderly like that? Enough out of me I wanted to mention that someone dropped off that paperwork. Even though it's a few years too late.

Roger, I agree, the poor woman in a wheelchair really got the shaft. The staff should have all been fired after that. I keep hearing about problems with the homeless in your neighborhood, sort of a generic complaint. You really laid it out in spades. I agree w/the poster who said all the council members should read your account. In fact, it should be published in a newspaper. Thank you, Roger, for all your reporting.

I agree with all the kudos, and, as Flicka &Rex said, you should send this to city council and other bigwigs & mucky-mucks. I do read 'em all; this is your best piece ever in my opinion.

It's really the same old thang you can tell them over and over again till your dead and gone 10 years nothing will be done. I have seen it over and over again they don't do anything. Watch and see..
