It is surprising what a large space that lot is - hope the developers will honor the location and importance of having a pretty building with some spaciousness.

Wonder how big that basement will be. Anyone heard what's to become of the mural? If they're not taking it down, I hope it's strong enough to withstand a small quake and that I'll remember not to walk or park there until there's more supporting structure.

Scary that they never realized it was next to the Arlington... it's always been easy to see from the parking lot. That's not a basement, that's going to be an underground parking lot and then on top will be shops and condos above that. The mural will be moved to the Chapala side...

That particular Von's was always the most 'colorful' store in their local line-up. It will interesting to see the finished project.

The mural is on it's way down now. One panel has already been removed and they were getting ready to take down the 2nd one. There's a HUGE crane on site to pluck the sections of the mural up and move them. It's quite the sad sight to see them going but I'm happy they're being preserved.

I'm looking forward to this block being revitalized. It's been an empty eyesore for too long.

This is a great site for redevelopment. Thanks to the previous edhat poster who provided links to the drawings of the new project! A permanent farmer's market sounds wonderful.

Abbys, thanx for mentioning the prior article, because I'd completely missed it somehow. Here's that article and the links I found in the comments there are these three: *SB Public Market, with links to PDF files about the market. *Alma Del Pueblo housing project. *Indy article 8/16/2010 about the entire development. "...37 residential condos, a market, and commercial retail space, altogether occupying about 100,000 square feet of space. ..."

Too bad the city or Arlington didn't buy the property and make it small shops and outside space. That would have been perfect for the location. I'm sure, do to zoning laws and other imperfect issues, the developer is going to cram as much concrete as possible to over condense the space. On a second note... That mural? Historic? Comical. Good I love how it shows indians slaving in toil and then how the catholic priest has indians enslaved doing the dirty work for their mission. That's a good thing to remember about history.

That mural was ugly when they put it up and is still ugly ! Historical my foot ! I remember whem they installed it. I was in high school in the late 60's, and we all made fun of it ! If the beautiful Don Quixote mural that was in the old library wasn't saved why is this piece of junk ? Guilty conscience ?

That is an ugly mural. Never thought it was worth preserving.
