Wow, John, that must have been a l-o-n-g flight from SB International Airport! Probably had to make sure extra fuel was on board, right? :-)

Vertical concrete wall. The I beams are set in a manner that prefabricated concrete walls can be slipped in between each set. They vibrate a temporary steel plate on the backside of each set so the earth can be removed before they slide the concrete walls in to place. I work right down on Kellogg and the noise, vibration, pounding, traffic...etc..is getting OLD! :)

A waste of tax dollars for sure. Perhaps it will allow some fish to do a bit more swimming. Preventing a catastrophic flood from damaging old town? A stretch indeed.

298001 - do you have the research to prove that or is it just a gut feeling?

From the site: During the last half century, San Jose Creek has overflowed many times, leaving residents and businesses in Old Town Goleta with substantial damage. Flooding most recently occurred in 1995 and again in 1998, highlighting the threat to property, public health and safety. The County of Santa Barbara began investigating solutions to the problem after the 1995 flooding. When the City of Goleta was incorporated in 2002, it undertook a multi-year effort to define an improvement project and find funding to support it. On June 30, 2011, those efforts came together in a unanimous vote by the Goleta City Council to award contracts for the San Jose Creek Capacity Improvement and Fish Passage Project.

Super neat report, John. And 'thank you' to 298013P for the site-history post. I followed the Goleta City discussion on Public Access TV -- but it is absolutely cool to see a unique 'air-to-sole' update by John here, with info added from 013P on Edhat.

The same folks who claim that this project is a "waste of taxpayer dollars" are the same people who would be the first to condemn the city for not doing enough to prevent the next flood that strikes the area. This is EXACTLY the reason we pay taxes. I'm glad to see that it is money well-spent.

I think the creek project makes a ton of sense. That area has indeed flooded a few times and therefore an update is due. On the other hand, all the round-a-bouts and extra pass-thru streets we're going to get in Old Town don't make any sense to me.

065: If you have every done any business in Old Town, you would know how much relief Hollister requires. Making Ekwill and Fowler go all the way through is a no brainer.

I've heard 2 stories. One is that there will be a traffic circle put there to slow down traffic going into UCSB. The other is that Goleta has long wanted an off ramp closer to campus so that you don't have to go all the way to Hollister and double back.

Wow! So fun to log in and see that so many others are interested in this. ARLMCDON, thanks so much for the project link! I was startled to learn that the Hollister bridge is next, imagining what a traffic nightmare that might be for two years. It was interesting standing by the creek, to see the grim looks on the faces of people getting off work there and imagining the noise and traffic problems they're enduring. I wonder about the recent airport improvements, including the terminal and the drainage upgrades - my guess is these projects are all complementary.
