Now that's really good.

The serious mentally ill people should be confined somewhere for treatment.

Isn't public safety supposed to be the number one priority of government?

Yea I have to report what I hear because thats what I do not all homeless people are bad. This sort of thing reflects bad on all of them. There is actually two 242 Assaults seprate involving different people downtown. Cares is being called involving the child assault.

This says there was a "report" so who knows what, if anything, actually happened! As Roger said, not all homeless do bad acts - nor do all "transients". Tourists are also "transients".

It sounded just as they said a punch to the face the parent reported it. It was at Rite Aide in the 800 Block of State. CSI Responded and so did Cares. At the same time some other guy unknown if it was also a transient assaulted someone in the 700 Block. The man in the 800 Block was reported as a transient that punched a 5 year old child in the face. That is what I heard I also would be going to jail if I saw that. I am by no means cured from my past.

We can all thank our mayor Helene Schneider for creating a haven for these bums! She really needs to GO!

If there is a candidate who will address this ongoing dangerous issue to our public safety in the next mayoral election, he/she will have my VOTE!

This really upsets me.

The creation of a haven for the transients, homeless, etc. isn't just Mayor Schneider's fault. The city's policy started way before her term started and also the county is involved too. So there are many of our current and former elected officials that share the responsibility.

When ever you talk with a homeless person it always goes back to where are their families? Why can't they go back to their families? My door will always be open to my family whenever they need help. We will never fix the homeless problem until we fix the breakdown of the family. If you want to thank someone for the homeless, thank Lady Riddley Tree. If you build it they will come and they have to the homeless shelter. Wasn't their a mayor who said "What homeless? Bus them out!" Harsh but true.

I hope the child is ok, hard to believe anyone let him walk off after that.

What worries me is how many people see problems like this as a reason to refuse services to anyone who is homeless. It seems obvious that if you do that then you will have more mentally ill homeless people on the street and they will have less treatment. In short incidences like this will become more frequent.

What to do about it is hard to figure out and thankfully not my job. I understand why people are getting desperate, but in our desperation lets not advocate for something that will make the situation worse for homeless AND everyone else.

Very mentally ill -- No telling what the person was seeing or hearing when he struck out! We need medical outreach to try to get our mentally ill street people (that's almost all of them; hearing voices - prob. severe bipolar or schizophrenic, or hoarding - prob. a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder) on meds, and keep an eye on their meds-taking schedule. But as even wealthy families with a mentally ill family member, and with access to all options, know, these illnesses are extremely hard to handle - to find the right meds, to balance them for the most effectiveness, to get the family member to take the meds, etc.

This is distressing and yet not surprising. I, too, hope the child is OK and that the perp. gets what he deserves, be it help, imprisonment, or (hopefully) both.

Blaming the mayor or anyone in particular for the homeless situation in Santa Barbara does no one any good. We live in a very appealing place with a mild climate, and yes, affluent people with money from which to beg. It's no different than birds flying south for the winter. You don't see a lot of transients flocking to Anchorage, for example. The problem, especially with our economy such as it is, is not going away anytime soon, if ever.

Our efforts here and elsewhere are better spent discussing possible solutions rather than pointing fingers and/or complaining about it.

The transient issue on State Street is out of control. My friends fear going downtown. Too much soliciting and fowl language. Now this. Read Councilman Frank Hotchkiss' letter to the editor in the SB Newspress today. Time to do something.

There was another incident involving a transient yelling at children at Dwight Murphy park earlier. The reporting party said there was an item in the transients hand as he was yelling. SBPD responded I believe they took the man away because there was a call for Park 2 to deliever personal proptery to the police station.

Incredibly disturbing. I was walking down Main St. in Venice, CA. when a transient took a swing at my 5 year old, barely missing him. I decided then it was time to leave L.A. Now I find myself avoiding State St., especially when friends visit, because of the aggressive and sometimes violent behavior of some of the transients. Something must be done.
