Too bad every travel journalist seems to elevate Superica as the gold standard for our Mexican food. Just once I'd like to see a few others mentioned in one of those articles. Romanti Ezer anyone?

I agree, while La Superica is indeed an SB icon, there are so many more restaurants worthy of mention. When LS is mentioned I immediately assume the person spent too much time reading a Sunset magazine and did no real SB research.

Today is the annual meeting of the Pearl Chase Society. (Note the correct spelling of the name of the woman who is primarily responsible for Santa Barbara being the jewel that it is). If she were here today we probably wouldn't have that ugly airport terminal.

La Super Rica is for yuppies and LA Yelpers who have little to no previous taqueria experience. It is not "bad," there are far worse places in town, but it is very bland and nothing mind blowing. Fresh tortillas are always a great thing, but the rest of the stuff just isn't that flavorful. The owners are nice folks they have a great hype machine/tourist trap going so more power to them. If you are into serious Mexican food far better options exist in SB.

Los Agaves, El Bajio, and La Colmena are all WAY better than Superica.

I thought the article was spot on and very fun but agree, travel writers have to start asking more locals about the restaurant scene. Agree with Bouchon, pass on Superica. Add Ca' Dario, Wine Cask, Opal, Julienne.

The owner of La Superica remembers my friend who went to UCSB 30 yrs ago and only comes back about once every 5 years. He greets her by name and chats with her about her family and stuff. With that kind of customer service, you don't need to have the best food. She would never eat anywhere else in town for Mexican food.

Personal connection is nice, good service is nice, but I'll accept those shortcomings for excellent, reasonably priced food. I have favorite Mexican restaurants depending upon if I want a taco or relleno or ..... Interesting how foodie topics on Edhat are often very popular.

funny, I see plenty of latinos there, and I'm a frequent visitor. Seems like about half the numbers they call out for food ready is in Spanish.

La Superica is not a bad place to go if you want safe, bland Mexican food and like to wait in a long line for it.

There is no Esau's anymore. The jerk who runs it is a disgrace to the founders.
