I don't welcome this closure either... I bike los carneros every morning and evening to work/school, and can foresee a bit of a danger doing so in the upcoming year. I really wish they would use this time to fix the fairview overpass, its a terrible design really. They could completely eliminate the intersection by the 76 station if they essentially cut across the diagonal and met the existing portion of the overpass at the top. The funky bend is what really slows the traffic and makes it such a mess. This would also allow them to go around all the businesses by big brand tire/mcdonalds, and hopefully improve flow. Ideally, the overpass would be a straight line to the hollister area of fairview, but many businesses are already in place in that area.

Considering they only just redid the Fairview overpass a few years ago (10? 15?) I doubt they'll be redesigning it anytime soon. The bend when you're going from the overpass toward Calle Real is horrid and it seems the lights are never timed right to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Seems odd that CalTrans is closing Fairview at 101 when all the work done will be up at Los Carneros? Anyone have any more information about why that is?

@474 I thought the same thing at first, but they're saying a future project (the Las Vegas/San Pedro Creek Culvert Replacement) is going to close the Fairview ramps when that starts so that's why they need to get going quickly on Los Carneros. Basically they DON'T want both locations' ramps closed at the same time.

I wonder how many people who complain are, "commuters" who don't pay the taxes here...Just something to think about. If you pay your taxes HERE, then complain all you want. ;) Been here 40 years and PAYING TAXES for that long too!

Cal Trans District 5 Administrative staff need to be replaced. They are based and living in San Luis Obispo and have NO CLUE about the state of our area's roads and highways or the impacts of daytime construction. ALL construction on high volume freeways and roads should be done from 10pm-5am.

The SB sections of the 101 are probably the worst maintained roads in the Caltrans system. Roadside litter is picked up and the bags stay in full view for weeks after. Some sections are thickly littered (look from the Las Positas on ramp north through Turnpike. Montecito area is totally trashed. Our local officials need to get on Caltrans to do a better job keeping our highway litter free. granted, the litter shouldn't be there in the first place but it is and Caltrans has a responsibility to taxpayers to maintain our highways. I do appreciate all Adopt a Highway groups. Now, Caltrans, do your part on the medians and in those areas not adopted.

Imagine what Cathedral Oaks will look like when everyone tries to avoid Los Carneros and Fairview from the freeway. This will definitely add additional traffic on Glen Annie and also on Patterson, to avoid the congestion. Even having the CHP office on Calle Real won't help...

Ugh. My 10 year old daughter named the intersection at Calle Real and Fairview, "The Eternal Stoplight of Doom." One can only imagine how bad that intersection will be for two to three years while these two projects are going on. And, yes, I live here and pay taxes too.

I'm the OP and my family has owned a house in Old Town since 1994, so yes, we pay taxes AND we live locally and have to deal with spill-over from traffic at this intersection every day. Yes, it can and does back up nearly to Hollister. I do plan my trips out to avoid lunch time and rush hour traffic as it can take many, many changes of lights to get through. I have been in the habit of taking Hollister to Los Carneros during busy times, but I guess that will be out as everyone else will, too. What would really help local residents is if the City would press forward on the plan to put a pedestrian/cyclist tunnel under the freeway along San Jose Creek. If there was a safer alternative to the Fairview overpass/intersection many of us wouldn't get into our cars at all.

Caltrans is not doing their job with these recent projects. 4 yrs to add lanes to the 101 between La Conchita and Carpenteria. Closing the northbound 101 at Gaviota. And now this mess. Maybe there are good reasons for these decisions but they are doing a poor job of explaining them to us.

@511 - commuters pay taxes too...HERE...we pay taxes out of our registration for our cars for road improvement, we pay income tax to the State of California, some of which is earmarked for roads as well. We pay sales tax, county property tax...everything that you pay...whats your point?

The fact that they expect it to take at least a year indicates some serious problems with resource allocation and logistics.

@563 Definite +1 to the bike/pedestrian underpass/overpass idea. If there were a way to get from old-town (or over near the airport) to the Fairview/Calle Real area without using the existing overpass, I'd use it all the time. I use the Patterson bike-path underpass often enough, but it's a bit out of the way. Fairview is a massive mess. I grew up here and now own my own home here, and it just keeps getting worse over time. I wish that Goleta had never incorporated, but now that it has, it would make sense if the city of Goleta would spend it's time addressing the worst traffic problem the city has, which is definitely Fairview by a very large margin. Even if they can't address it for 10 more years, that's fine, but they can start planning now, and letting us know about the plans. Anything else seems a bit like rearranging deck chairs.

I haven't seen anything that says whether the intersection of Los Carneros and Calle Real will be completely closed while they are constructing the roundabout. Does anyone know if this is the case?

From the Public Information Officer, City of Goleta: For public safety reasons, the Los Carneros and Calle Real will not be completely closed for the roundabout construction. (Closing the intersection would limit access to/from the fire station and CHP offices.) The reason Fairview will be closed is because the culvert project is closer to the Fairview on ramp. Fairview will not be closed because of the roundabout project.
