Apparently he fell so hard it knocked a year off his life!

"The CALSTAR helicopter eventually picked up the 17-year-old..."

Hope he recovers fast and fully.

The Cottage-landing helicopter has been busy recently with injured hikers, broken arm, broken leg.

The Cottage-landing helicopter has been busy recently with injured hikers, broken arm, broken leg.......none of which meet the criteria that COTTAGE said would qualify for a helicopter flight into the surrounding neighborhood. Cottage Motto: Promises are made to be broken.

Once again our local station doing everything it can to butcher a news report. Why bother? Either get a budget that can support accuracy and detailed reporting or just leave it up to the other guys.

296178 - I hope you never need a helicopter flight for a broken limb.

That's not the point. Cottage got approval for an airport in the middle of an established neighborhood on the PROMISE that it would only be used for life-threatening trauma cases. Sprained ankles and broken limbs are NOT life threatening, and those patients can easily be transported to the hospital relatively quickly and quietly via ground transportation. At neighborhood meetings (with City Council members in attendance) Cottage reiterated its promise that the helicopter flights would NOT be used for anything other than life-threatening cases where time was of the essence to save a life. Again, broken bones are not life threatening, and do not meet the criteria for helicopter transport. The Council did not give Cottage carte blanche use of the helipad. Reasonable and intelligent people instituted limitations. Cottage appears to be violating those limitations.

Compound fractures can be life threatening. Like the one the 9 year old girl had.

I agree with 178 and I don't even live by Cottage Hospital. Broken bones are usually not life threatening. My understanding (which may be wrong) is that before the helipad was built, life threatening trauma cases were airlifted to Earl Warren and then picked up by ambulance and taken to Cottage. Another possibility would be to airlift them to the airport and have an ambulance take them to Goleta Valley. Just a thought.

This young man has a shattered femur and no one knew if he had a spinal cord injury until CAT scans could be done at Cottage Hospital. He underwent surgery last night. If this were your child, I'm sure you would want to get him to the hospital as quickly as possible.

Shocking number of MDs on edhat who can triage a patient over the internet with only a badly written article to go on.

A couple months ago a woman was helo transported, and all she had was a sprained ankle. Cottage is mismanaging the information flow. Again....if it's life threatening, helo transport is justified. If it's minor, then they need to give the neighbors a break and use the readily available ground transports that almost always respond to the scene. Again, again....reasonable and intelligent.

@178 I would love to see the source for that info.

Geez. Complaints complaints complaints. Don't some get tired of complaining all the time? Either it's costing taxpayers too much to rescue people or it's too noisy to rescue people as it disturbs their TV viewing. Where's the compassion for life and well being?

Mid-day helicopters should not prompt complaints. Period. Don't try to diagnose anything over the internet either. Sprained ankle? How do you know if she was in shock and to what extent? How do you know if she lost conciousness/ heart stopped/ O.D. etc? There are all kinds of possible scenarios that the public would NEVER know even after the fact that may prompt the helicopter ride.

I live by the airport with helicopters & airplanes going over at ALL hours of day and night. Really, it's no big deal. You get used to it.

Please have patience for those patients in need. Thank you :)

And at least one of the "patients" in need was a healthy senior official; Cottage should supply the flight manifests for all helicopter flights/landings. This has nothing to do with whether I or my family or you or your family or compassion, but obeying the rules and regulations that they agreed to abide by.

If I lived near an airport, as 346, I would expect air traffic; if I lived in a residential area with streets near a hospital, I would expect ambulances and police; if I lived next to a highway, I'd expect traffic noises; if I lived in a semi-rural area, I'd expect owls and other wildlife. Not, then not.

Perhaps if Cottage can not/will not use its Goleta facility or Earl Warren and shuttle, it should buy out the neighbors or reimburse them for loss of market value for their houses. That way there would not be the continuing complaints.

@133P source please. I always thought patient privacy was protected but you seem to know so much.

@133: Why do we need the flight manifests when YOU can so accurately tell everyone who's on board and why?

Dilly: Every news outlet reported that the woman had an injured ankle. They added that she was treated an released. Doesn't sound very life-threatening, but I'm sure you will ignore the Cottage agreement and make a case for it.....
