This again? Target and 99-cent only stores are two completely different sizes. Would you like to see a Target downtown creating traffic nightmares? Have any of the people on here whining about the 99 cent store actually been inside of one? Who's the person at edhat who has the ax to grind about Target?

A 99cent store needs a heck of a lot less space than a Target - that's not exactly a valid comparison (could you imagine a Target in that spot on State?). Target would increase traffic by quite a bit - wherever it goes would need to be a big enough lot size for both the building and the and be able to accommodate the increase in traffic. The reason it was shot down near the airport years ago was mainly because it was in Goleta, but on BS property. So SB would get all the benefits (business in "SB", taxes, etc), but none of the negatives (pollution, traffic, noise, etc). I understood that. I think Target just needs to find the right spot. But dear god, I hope it's soon.

(Not a fan of big stores here but) as a viewer of the Public Access TV Channels I have watched some Target-folks give presentations at the City of Goleta Planning Commission. I Googled the topic and found this information: KION Central Coast News_"GOLETA -- A new big-box store may be coming to the Central Coast, but the process of approving a Target in the City of Goleta means lots of changes before an official plan can be presented. .... In the City of Goleta's general plan, big-box stores are not allowed, besides the ones in existence. .... All the planning, reviews and public meetings would take around two to three years to complete."

A Target store has been approved by the Goleta City Council last year. The store will be 2 stories and be about 165,000 sq ft..corner of Los Carneros and Hollister. It's probably about 2 years away.

The 99cent store is a great place to shop. We go all the way to Lompoc or Santa Maria. They have fresh veggies of Farmers Market quality and some gourmet items that are available to those on a budget, or those of us who like to save money. Best place to go for Christmas and holiday items. All kinds of interesting people shop there, Jay Leno does comedy routines about it and cookbooks dedicated to products stocked by the store have been written about it. Don't knock it until you try it!

Target is 2 years away and I am sooooo excited! Let's keep the jobs HERE instead of driving to Oxnard and Ventura to shop! 99 cent store is exciting too, about time! Now if only we could have some family friendly venues like we used to... I'm talking Golf & Fun and go-carts, etc. What about water slides somewhere in Goleta? Wonder if anyone has noticed how it's gone quiet on the Target front? Kind of says it all. Target is a hard core smart business entity. Set up a bunch of hurdles for them and they will calculate the benefits and detriments and go elsewhere. I live in Goleta. Target is worth the drive to me - more than happy to give my hard earned dollars to the VC. The shopping and the service are far better there.

Goleta City Manager Daniel Singer said this about the proposed Target, "We are still maybe three years off, assuming that everything goes well and they get approved. The decision makers still have the right to say no" 2/22/2012. As well as, "Assuming we become the owners of the property, we could sell a portion to Target" 6/12/2012. So it sounds like things are still up in the air, and it is possible things could go either way.

We shop weekly at the 99 Cent Only Stores in Oxnard and Camarillo. Great quality berries lately including some wonderful raspberries. 99.99 cents a basket. NO store here in Santa Barbara can beat that price. Also the exact same salad mix that Costco sells for over $5.00. Only 99.99 cents there. I will say that you do need to watch for expiration dates and check the underside of produce containers but you need to do that at Trader Joe's or Gelson's, too.

The anti-Target argument that it will bring awful traffic problems is ridiculous. What about the freeway traffic that it will reduce: All the people hopping on the 101 heading to the Targets in Ventura? And the sales taxes that it will bring to our city, instead of the millions of $$ now going to Ventura city, will MORE than make up for a bit more local traffic.

@831: That's simply not true. Target did one time contribute $$$ to some political candidate who was anti-gay, but after profoundly apologizing to the gay community, Target put its money where its mouth is and ever since has been contributing LOTS to gay pride events, etc. The most loathesome anti-gay business is Chik-Fil-A, which donates MILLIONS to anti-gay candidates and causes. This uber-evangelical fast-food joint is coming to upper State Street very soon, having taken over Burger King's location. But what can you expect from a business (Chik-Fil-A) whose vice-president is named Bubba? And no, I'm NOT kidding. Yay, Target! Boo, Chik-Fil-A!

If you don't want to shop at them because of their donation history, that is also your right. As for me, I will continue to patronize both companies and can't wait for them to open up here in our community. Response to the person who asked what Target has that is worth buying. Things like bedside lamps with some style and of reasonable quality at a reasonable price ($15-20). Style and OK quality for a reasonable price is difficult to find in most big box stores. Target is an exception in that sense. This is America. Where a big box retailer can plop down a store right next to a university and the students won't have much of a choice to shop anywhere else because all of the competition has disappeared due to the low quality cheap products the giant retailer is offering. That's capitalism in a country controlled by corporate conglomerates.

Taken a a group, the comments about Target and Chick Fil A supporting anti-gay causes beautifully illustrates the futility of any form of single issue politics. If you truly have one cause which you consider to be "the one" that you judge every politician, issue, and business by, then eventually you will be forced to compromise every other cause, no matter how worthy. I may not like some of the things that these two businesses support, but can anyone point me at a single, solitary business that supports everything that I support and supports nothing that I oppose?

This has gotten way afield of the OP's question. "We" are not putting a .99 store on State St. The private landlord signed a lease for an approved use. That's how the .99 store came to SB. There is no site on State St. suitable for a store the size of Target, which consumes as much parking as Target, unless perhaps the Macy's building at La Cumbre Plaza. Target wants to build its own giant box, along with a vast expanse of parking lot. Target tried for an SB parcel but the impacts on Goleta were too bad and complicated. My guess is the major commercial landlords of SB weren't that gung-ho, either. The new site Target's after is wholly in Goleta, and they'll probably prevail eventually, but there are a lot of issues and Target may decide it's not worth it. There is no "we" in it. It's all big players and big money. Look at how gutted old town Goleta is. Personally I don't get the big box love at all.

I'm writing as the Public Information Officer for the City of Goleta ... The City Council has not approved a Target in Goleta. Last fall they unanimously approved initiating a process that would convert the designated land use to regional retail which would pave the way for Target to come into Goleta. Target has now submitted an application and it's working its way through the design and planning process. The proposed location is near Hollister and Los Carneros Way. It requires bringing several parcels together to make one parcel big enough to house a store of this size. You can go to the City's website, click on Meetings/Agendas at the top and then go to the Design Review Board Meeting from January 24, 2012 to read the staff report and the proposed plans.

Such stores like Walmart, destroy Mom 'n' Pop stores, steal customers from smaller businesses, it is just sad and disgusting...conglomerate giants make me sick, with the exception of those that actually care about the local environment... Google "Walmart takes over" or "Walmart destroys" you will see an extended list drop down of popular searches...
