So--next time I'm stopped, if I tell the Cops my name is John Smith and I don't have a license, they should let me call my buddy to come drive me home---and because I don't have a permanent address, the Ticket will never get to me and go unpaid---life in the USA is getting better all the time!

593- You tell them your name is John Smith, they will go to their computer in their car, type it in, and ask you for your DOB and other identifying information. As soon as they realize you're lying to them, they'll arrest you.

What a great, cost-effective way to get idiots off the road. Let's see more.

Don't care if they have to stop every car on the road, every frickin night until these alcoholics get the message. What I object to is any announcements of when and where these checkpoints will be stationed. Where's the fun in that?

Whatever the cost is to conduct sobriety checkpoints in my opinion is money well spent. You can't put a price on peoples health and lives. It also warns people with these announcements to stay off of the road and that's all good!

I have a problem calling it a DUI checkpoint - if they don't hand out any DUI's. People get the tyrany they put up with ... I bet if these cops were on patrol doing their jobs - they could of found some drunks. Insted of harassing 500 people who are doing nothing wrong ...

746P--"whatever their price" they are worth it? What a silly idea. In the real world where I and almost else lives we have to set priorities on how we spend money. The cost of these intrusions in our freedom in just monetary numbers is huge. As 747 points out, just leaving these officers on patrol would almost certainly result in more DUI arrests and would also do more to keep the community safe from other threats. The money spent could also save more lives if spent on hepatitis vaccinations, cancer screenings or a hundred other proven life saving interventions.

I have never seen the exact locations of the checkpoints published.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Big waste of money. Every single time I've called the police to report a drunk driver, I sit on the phone with dispatch for an average of 15 to 20 minutes before a unit is available. Its up to the citizens to report drunk drivers, but I'm getting tired of calling the police to find out the person parked and already went to sleep before an officer was available. The sheer stupiditiy with where some of these are placed just blows my mind. Leaving Ellwood/Camino real marketplace on Hollister? Really? What about all that traffic from IV?

888 - SBSO conducts the Goleta checkpoints for the most part - Ellwood/Camino is in their jurisdiction. IV is jurisdicted by CHP. CHP rarely does fixed check points unless it's in conjuction with other law enforcement agencies.
