ROGER DODGER helpful negative off topic

Everyone responded including Search and Rescue I'm sure all is well by now.

I was on that trail today after work and Search & Rescue whizzed past me to rescue the poor girl. Then I heard the helicopter and knew it must have been serious. Way to go S&R, what a great group of men and women!

A broken arm requires helicopter evacuation? Were bones sticking out? Was an artery severed? Was there a lot of blood loss? Were her legs okay?

If S&R was going to come to her aid, why not do it with a splint and sling, on foot and help her get safely to a trail head where a vehicle could meet her to get her to medical attention. What about this injury required a helicopter evacuation? If she got to an ER she'd be triaged as low priority while people with collapsed lungs and seizures got taken care of first because their medical needs were life threatening. A broken arm, while painful is not life threatening.

A helicopter for a broken arm that happened at a location close to civilization and medical care? Overkill.

Wow... there's been a rash of hiker related incidents lately. Are people just less mindful when heading out to the trails or is it the saturation coverage of hearing every incident broadcast on the airwaves? Just curious.

603, I am guessing that there are more people on the trails. The more the trails are written up in the online media, the more people go and, often, are unprepared for even the slightest of accidents. And nearly everyone has a cellphone and many think they are entitled....

I head the chopper action last night while on a bike ride and assumed fire. A fire truck hit the sirens just as it passed me on Sycamore Canyon Rd., so I bombed home assuming something had started in the hills.

I will agree a broken arm does not require a chopper, especially on a friendly trail like the CS, but, that is just me. I hope everyone made it out safe and sound.

How much do you want to bet this will require another "emergency" helicopter trip to Cottage Hospital?

Its very easy for you to say that after the fact. Why not hire you to be the designated person to decide who gets the chopper and who doesn't? You can then explain to the family and/or public based on your flawless reasoning.

If it was you or a loved one I am sure you would appreciate the helicopter being in the area in case it was more a more serious injury. The first responders had the same questions as @588 before making contact with the hiker. Was it a compound fracture, any other injuries, blood loss, etc... Or maybe the hiker was off the trail after her fall and the helicopter was helpful in locating her. I am glad she is ok and got fast, professional, and well trained emergency responders.

I am getting tired of hearing all the complaining about hikers. I am guessing we hear about more rescues because they are being covered by Roger et all... As well as cellphones making it easier to get help. S&R is a civil service, get over it. If you get in a car wreck because you got distracted you get police, fire, and ambulance response and dont pay for anything but the medical bills, same as a hiker. If you think hikers should pay then so should the at fault driver, or the home owner that left a door unlocked, or anybody who needs our first responders because of something that in hindsight was avoidable (nearly everything right).

If it makes you feel better think of your taxes, State and Federal, as insurance. You pay them, I pay them, every one else pays them. You are now insured against emergencies. If we need an army to fight a war, thats covered. So are police, fire, etc if you need them... And lots of other things too. If your roads need paved you dont have to shell out $$$ you paid road insurance. Feel better? This way you dont have to be personally insulted every time someone needs a city, state, federal resource that your taxes contribute to.

The injured hiker was a little girl. Can we please lay off her?

COMMENT 294588 helpful negative off topic

Surely the little girl hiker had adults with her. No one is picking on the child and all wish her well.

The topic of concern is the overuse of the helicopter when it's not indicated.

And yes, I was at one time responsible for making decisions to triage or send out helicopters for medical transports. There are protocols and criteria to be met. It can be dangerous for the copter crew. A broken arm does not require a helicopter response for the Cold Springs Trail.

I overheard on the scanner yesterday that it was a compound fracture to the arm with a fair amount of bleeding, montecito fire had started an IV for fluids as the girl was in pain and most likely going into the early stages of shock. The helicopter was surely used in the best interest of this young girl and the safety of the rescuers that would have had to hike her out over a few hours. That's not the easiest trail to hike. So glad the rescuers had a quick response up the trail.

I, for one, am glad you no longer make decisions to triage or send out helicopters.

588 were you at the scene?

My friend was hiking with this young 9 year old and her mother and said that the bones were sticking out of her arm and she was bleeding after falling off a rock at Tangerine Falls. Shame on anyone who second guesses the emergency personnel. You were not there and could not access the situation!
I am quite sure if it was you or a loved one you would want the best a quickest transport to the hospital.

851, I'd also like the quickest transportation to the grocery store -- send the helicopter!

588 - You know there's a decision process, and yet you chime in to criticize it with no facts. It's clear to all of us why you're no longer in the decision chain, thankfully.

In general, I think that "first responders" are over-used, over-celebrated, and overpaid (and pensioned). In this case, however, I'm glad that they were there to help this little girl.
