Congratulations to Jim Speck on this terrific honor, and to all the people out at UCSB involved in this distinguished work.

I've heard hyperbolic GaN propaganda since I first went to work at UCSB in 2000. It serves to protect those involved in the unaccountable criminal UCSB racket that facilitates the corrupt exchange of corporate welfare for tokens of patronage.

Seoul Opto is playing the same game as Cree Lighting that exchanged the pittance of a token endowment for a much greater dollar value in corporate welfare funneled to them through UCSB.

Even after having incubated and nurtured Cree's success, UCSB, Lois Capps and other dim politcos let North Carolina reap the harvest after California sowed and cultivated the crop when Cree built its $300 million R&D facility in NC instead of Goleta.

Closing criminal UCSB would be a good action that actually stimulated the economy.

What's most fascinating to me is that this is a direct continuation of work begun in the 1950s in infrared technology, and continued at SBRC (now Raytheon) under people like my Dad. The aerospace background of many of today's materials science discoveries needs to be understood and lauded. Just as military/ government funding supported the majority of the early research in the internet (DARPA-Net), for military purposes, and then much later, it became a general civilian benefit, the same pattern applies to a great deal of optical physics and materials work. Basic scientific research is important, and we should continue to fund it at a national level.

@293992

I don't think you have properly weighed the costs vs. the benefits of closing UCSB ... along with numerous other flaws in your thinking.
