I'm pretty sure it's a tipuana tipu. To me, tipuanas look like jacarandas, only they have yellow flowers instead of purple ones. They grow like nobody's business, but they're majorly messy, as you can tell by the photos. I think their blooming time, at least hereabouts, is about on the same schedule as jacarandas.

I think it's strange how often people comment on the messiness but not the beauty. I wonder if the Japanese complain about the messiness of the cherry blossoms?

@720: The Japanese CONSTANTLY complain. "Oh! These filthy cherry trees!" they say. "We'd chop them all down but the tourists like the messy blossoms." You know--kind of like how a lot of Santa Barbarans view Fiesta. By the time the last cherry blossom has fallen, the Japanese are so fed up with the whole thing that they don't even eat the cherries, they throw them at each other.

Is the same type of tree in the Mentor parking lot on Hollister next to Goleta Valley Hospital?

We have 4 in our yard, there were 7, but got rid of three of them a couple of yfears ago. They grow like monsters and need to be cut back every other year, root barriers need to be placed around the house, they are constantly shedding; flowers, leaves, twigs, sap particles, and go from great shade trees to twiggy bare trees at the wrong times of the year, but I must say they are pretty.

I lived in Japan for some time and I can assure you that no one throws cherries at anyone because it is against the raw.

@907: They do it when the cops aren't rooking. What a mess! Cherries everywhere. Not to mention all those damned blossoms all over the place. At least in Carpinteria they don't throw avocados, and I've only seen very few strawberries hurled in Oxnard. I think living on a small island like Japan makes the people go a little nuts when the cherry blossoms blanket everything.

That is what George Washington told his dad. He chopped down the Cherry tree because it was so messy. It did'nt work, remember, he still got in trouble! Happy 4th of July!

There are several of these in Alice Keck. We had three on the property which thankfully were recently removed. Root system is a nightmare, it took the walkway up in the front yard. The dropping flowers are fine, but they drop ALL their leaves in the winter and they are tiny leaves. They grow really fast and dropped sap all over everything. Fine for a park, but I highly suggest you keep them out of your yard.

They are the street tree on Via Diego. Such an irresponsible choice!! A major headache and expense for all the homeowner associations.

The tree was hard to see on my phone but my best guess will have to be some kind of Cassia.

True they don't throw avacados in Carpinteria, but they used to throw tomatoes. On Halloween kids would have tomato fights and the town would be red the next day; fields of tomatoes were being grown by farmers.

294032 - The Tipus on Via Diego are street trees, and as such are City of SB property. With proper care they are great trees to line avenues, and in this instance are properly situated. Imagine the street without them. Imagine the dramatically reduced property values without them. The street is beautiful because of the trees; not because of the surrounding buildings. Any plant is a weed in the wrong place. The Via Diego trees are NOT weeds.

Tipuana tipwho? Living on Via Diego we have a love/hate relation with them. Coming off of La Colina and turning on to Via Diego this time of year is the most beautiful parklike avenue in a green tunnel with yellow carpeting. We just call them the Cheeto Trees. Their winged seeds will be filling up the rain gutters as the weeks progress.

At least the blossoms and small leaflets are compostable. The seeds are another thing, comming up everywhere as major weeds in gardens and hard to kill. The yellow blossoms quickly become a mass of ugly gray black sticky stuff. Ugh!
