Wasn't the age originally reported as a couple in their 50's? I was wondering why someone so old would do that...now it makes sense. Young, drunk and....

Two young people go out on the town, and throw down a blanket overlooking the ocean late night. Could happen to anyone in college. Very sad I feel for them and their families. I hope they both recover.

Aristophanes: “Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever.”

Here's an observation: these people have families and friends that care. Imagine if the people injured were your friends or family, how would you like to read about what happened? (And I write as one who at times has given in to my first instincts and sometimes written snarky comments.)

I used to be that age.....am very happy I made it through that stage.....I can't judge those two, I did some spectactularly stupid things while inebriated.

If they didn't get close to the edge, no problem.

@FLYLIGHT: thank you for your comment, it's the only one that sounds half-way mature. It's easy to blame and point the finger but no one on this board is in the position to judge anyone. All of the facts have not been released. Why are people so quick to condemn? Anyone can make a mistake. Young, old, inbetween. Given the circumstances, and the condition of these two young adults, I think it shows a lack of compassion for everyone to make jokes and talk about how stupid they or their parents were. Words of encouragement would be better. Wondering how many of these snarky comments are from parents that actually have kids this age - my guess is none. Hoping they will recover and be okay.

I'm with @546. Less snark, more compassion.

Why would anyone want to gloat over the misfortune of these two young adults and their families?

Let's hope for a good outcome for the injured and their families. What a dreadful price to pay for climbing a fence.

Another possible reason why the families might dispute this is a insurance company can get out of paying the bill if a individual can be held responsible for their injuries due to drugs or alcohol. I hope both of them recover fully and soon.

Compassion has become a cheapened concept, tossed around here like penny candy and rendered meaningless except as a buzz word for: do nothing, look down your nose at others and feel smug about it. Compassion as a word has become creepy. A mind-control creep-out word.

So now we're arguing over semantics? If the word "compassion" offends you, try kindness, sympathy, humanity or empathy. Sounds like you haven't experienced much "compassion" from others.

Depending on how much they had at the club, lack of sleep could be as much to blame as the alcohol. Who knows. Could have been me or any number of my friends at 23. Hope both recover soon.

I had a dear sweet friend who fell to her death near Hendry's Beach - the circumstances were cloudy at best. She walked there all the time. Many people theorized about what happened. All I know is that I loved her and think of her all the time. She had two little boys who are now growing up without her. They will never know how awesome she was. It was so gut wrenching. I don't know how these young folks will fare but I wish them well. I hope they survive and heal. I hope their families do not have to experience what my friend's family did. No one should have to go through that.

560P. Good point. Also will be useful information for the defense of the city when the angry family sues for negligence for not having a razor topped 12 foot fence to deter people from crawling over it.

Very sad. I can only think about the two of them laying there in the sand for hours with a rising tide. Thank God the high tide was some 2 hours after they were discovered by the passerby. I hope that they both have a speedy and full recovery. It is way too early to point fingers and place blame.

Hate to think of the number of times back in the 60s I drove under the influence in a car that didn't have seatbelts or any safety features at all - and survived to hope these two kids survive without lasting harm.

Further proof, nothing good happens after 2:00 a.m.

Actually it is likely that most alcohol in their systems would have dissipated between the time they left the bar and the time they got to the hospital.

They left the bar at closing time and the call for rescue didn't come in until after 6am. Add to that the time to locate them and stabilize them for transport.

Blood alcohol can go from waaaaay to drunk to drive to only mildly buzzed in 5-6 hours.

Not so, 585P: Small amounts of alcohol ingestion (one to three ounces) may still be detectable in the blood ten to twelve hours later—depending on the person.
