Nice photos. I love living on the Mesa as well, it is sort of a tight knit community and everything you want is walking distance. I grew up in San Roque and like the foothills and trails, but when I decided to buy a home nothing beats being within walking distance to the Pit, or Hendry's, Mesa Lane, and 1000 steps, especially in the summer. Most Mesa locals are really friendly and watch out for one another, I love feeling that safety that isn't present elsewhere in SB besides 'Cito. We are very fortunate to live in paradise, I have traveled extensively and lived different places both foreign and domestic, but SB will always be my home, it is hard to rival. Enjoy your summer all SBL's.

Hendry's is great. I used to go there often to walk, but during the summer it is more difficult. The parking lot gets backed up with cars that stop in the loop, hoping for a spot.

I can't believe I'm saying it, but I wish they would put in a booth and charge a couple of bucks for parking. I'd be back in a minute if the County had a way to control this.

When I was growing up in he 40's Hendry's Beach was where my parents and their friends hung out. These were pre-skin cancer scare days. Sunblock was unknown. Our objective was to get as tan as possible. We often overdid it and our skin would peel. Heading towards Hendry's our excitement would peak when we reached the point on Las Positas where there was a bit of a rise in the road. From there we could see if there were big swells or not. These were pre-surfboard, pre-bodyboard days. We body-surfed and rode waves on old inner-tubes and big white cotton "beach bags" that my mother would make. We'd wet the bags and fill them with air by running down the beach with the bags open, tying them off quickly with a rope. Exhausted after a day at the beach and getting tumbled by the waves, we'd head to the Foster's Freeze on De La Vina for a malt or a sunday, which cost .25 back then. Hard to beat growing up in beautiful Santa Barbara!

578, it's worth a little planning on the visitor's part if parking close to Hendry's is the goal. Convenience isn't each person's right. But, in Santa Barbara, accessibility to the beach is. So, thinking for the greater good, let's leave Hendry's free. It's the classy thing to do.

I agree, we should never turn to pay for parking at Hendry's or any beach parking on the Mesa. There is always a spot on a side street which entails a little walk. I don't want our town to be like Ventura or LA, it takes away from the small town feel. As for the guy who said that there wasn't surfing or bodyboarding in SB, you are wrong. My Grandfather surfed regularly in and around SB in the 40's and 50's. There was also a surf club that competed against other surf towns like Windansea and Malibu. Surfing caught on in CA even before and during WW2 when the Navy was stationed in Hawaii. SB and SoCal towns were littered with surfers as was Santa Cruz and a few other places north. Sunscreen wasn't used as ofen back then and there were no wetsuits, surfers wore blue jean cut off shorts and wool sweaters for warmth during the winter months. Happy 4th all SB loc's.
