Could that be bands of seaweed, John Wiley? Hope it is not "red tide" with the resultant sea mammal sicknesses and death (and, often, pelican sicknesses and death.)

Just kelp...I've been ocean swimming daily for the past two weeks...no signs of red tide just yet...soon though.

On the first pic, the dark band of seaweed is closest to shore just below the surf line in the pic. Below it to the bottom of the pic is a slightly reddish-orange hue that stops further offshore. That's the change I've noticed the last few days. It's only in a few areas and not nearly as dark as I've seen it when there was a full red tide. I only saw the one smaller area by East Beach, then the next day there are two and both are bigger. Glad it's still faint, and maybe it will pass with cooler weather.

I can only spot the slight tinge of discolouration in the top image. But by adding a warming filter in post what you must have seen with your amber sunglasses popped out more in both images. This is still very faint and not as thick as it can get when it looks like river runoff pouring into the ocean.

Thank you!!! That's what I was mostly curious about---the kelp beds. Really cool!!!

Nice photos. Wishing the sea weeds were in the sea compost pile.
