I'm not positive, but maybe an Orb Weaver? If so, they're not aggressive and they catch lots of bugs.

OP here - thanks for ID 305p! Spidey might be a Crucifix or Cross Orb Weaver (Araneus diadematus), dorsal view. Observed later, all insect prey caught in web were consumed! Weaver had changed original position rotated 360 degrees but still remained in center of large web, contentedly digesting dinner! Ain't nature grand?!

Very clever image capture. Love that the spider is perfectly etched in light with no distracting background save for the moon. And great colour management.... you know what you're doing!!

Love the picture. And, yes, Orb Weaver. Leave it be if it is not in your way. They catch bugs. Very beneficial - and I really don't like spiders, but those I leave be.

Only spiders you need to worry about here are brown recluse and black widow. Anything else is probably doing more good than harm.

It's just a regular kind of garden spider. Not out for you or pets, unless you keep insects. ;-) If you see one, be on the lookout for others. I've done enough of the "spider web dance" at our house because of these dudes (dudettes?). We name ours all Carl, based on the first Carl we had at our kitchen window years ago.

@418 - this was a collaborative photo effort! I have a D90 Nikon. A friend and I fiddled with camera settings before choosing this capture. Used the on-board flash - my friend held the headlamp for illumination. A daytime macro shot with a powerful flash would have shown more detail. Search online (species described in earlier post) and you will see other photos of this amazing creature! In the morning the web was gone - I did share the photo with the owner of the property - he must have grabbed a broom!

What a photo! This big thing, those legs in a web with the moon in the background. You have a future in Hollywood.

@655 ahaha! Ms. Lady Orbie is too busy building her intricate, tidy webs, catching prey in the canyon to bother glammin' it up down in the big city! signed-Orbie's agent
