It was a beautiful send off for a local commercial fisherman who died at Santa Cruz island diving for urchins last week. Andreas Martinez, known as the king of a Gypsies, a fierce rugy player, the captain of the Josephine, "El Guapo" and the Spaniard. Truly a icon of the fishery. It is the way the brotherhood of fishermen say farewell. The parade of boats followed his boat to sea with and much merriment with banter via the radio, fireworks and flares in his honor. The flotilla then circled his boat in a solum prosession before heading back to the harbor to honor his his life, celebrated with music, fabulous flamenco music, dancing and with a paella made with the fruits of the sea. Truly a moving experience. Life was just more interesting with him In it. Condulences to his dear wife Gloria.

I saw this on the news. I heard the testimony of his brother. What a fitting memorial for such a well loved man. May he rest in peace.

I didn't know him as well as others, but he was always cool to me. I went out to show my respects for him during this and was impressed at the huge turnout. As I sat among all the different boats watching this, I said the same thing to myself that someone else said here.. we can only hope we'll be remembered as Andres was. It was truly a celebration of his life, and undoubtedly just as he would want it. I too will miss Andres.
