Whiptails are much different. More slender and creamy long thin tail. It's an alligator lizard.

Most definitely *not* an Alligator Lizard. It's some subspecies of Whiptail (Cnemidophorus).

I have to go with the whiptail. That guy is a spitting image of the California variety of the Western Whiptail pictured in the Peterson Western Reptiles Guide.

MACPUZL nailed this one. Cnemidophorus (whiptail). I'd think I'd died and gone to heaven if I spotted one of these guys in my garden. Love my alligator lizards. Damn neighborhood cats keep terrorizing them. Rescued one adolescent last week. Tailess, traumatized, but alive, and no blood. Whew.

One of the supspecies of Western Whiptail, most likely California Whiptail (Cnemidiphorus tigris mundus)

Some species of Whiptails are all female, reproducing by parthenogenesis, so there may well be no big boys, or even little ones.
