Doesn't Leadbetter have a fence at the edge of the cliffs to keep the curious from wandering too close to the edge known for its instability?

Not sure haven't been there in some time last I heard the park was falling off the cliffs.

The fence is half size, you can easily walk over the fence to stand on the cliff.

070: Shoreline Park is fenced all along the edge but it would be (or could be) tempting to go over the fence and sit on the edge or, noting the time of this report, be camping there.

Give me a break! We need fences to keep the Darwin challenged out of harms way...?

My guess is that a whole chunk of the cliff fell down while they were stitting/standing there. A very good reason for not setting up a picnic or sunning yourself below the cliffs - catastrophes can and do happen. Those two are lucky to still be alive. Why all the snark when lives are at stake. Sheesh already!

It's not uncommon to see people climb over the fence and stand or sit on the edge of the cliff. None of us can speculate what really happened until we know the details, just hope they have a full recovery.

@109 I completely agree with you that it's about statistics, but could they have been pushed off? Or maybe they had too much to drink, were fighting and accidentally rolled off or one grabbed the other and both of them went over? I'm sure that someone has the statistics on those scenarios. It would not be an "accident" if someone pushed them off and true insanity - not the first time someone has been pushed off a cliff. I also send my prayers and hope the fall victims are doing well and hoping for a speedy recovery.

It went out as a male and female fall victim on the sand near Shoreline Park, cross Street of La Marina. I never heard how it happened.

Have you been to that section of the cliffs lately? It is sliding and falling down in chunks. People no longer sit on that section unless they are nuts.

Boy Scouts use to teach responsible outdoor skills. Now with the know-it-all entitlement and extreme sports generation doing stupid things in stupid places we get the roar of overhead helicopters hauling this self-inflicted carnage to Cottage instead of hearing the applause that used to go to Eagle Scout merit badge winners.

3134... fences that are waist high are only warnings of danger, not meant to stop anyone. Self preservation with a sprinkling of intelligence is what is supposed to stop anyone from climbing over.

the urban hikers posted a story and photos of the place where the people fell from in todays "fresh local news. it sounds like it was an innocent accident. maybe they drank too much and then did something stupid/romantic and the cliff gave way beneath them. who knows? but sheesh, people. why not try to be nice about a tragedy that happened to a couple of 50-something people? i wish them a quick recovery.

Whatever happened to accepting responsibiltys for our own actions?Wither it be lack of common sense,an accident,or work of god we now blame others.Usually this is followed by a lawsuit ,pushed on by a greedy lawyerand alot of times directed at the city. This cost to taxpayers is usually followed by more fencing or limiting the other citzens(who practice good common sense).Perfect examples are Lake Caneros or Cold Springs bridge. When does it end?Probably when we are all fenced in and deemed politically correct.

Sadly people don't pay attention to warnings and usually everything is fine but this time things weren't. I'm sorry to hear that they were injured and I hope that this situation is something people see as a reason for NOT climbing the fence. The fence is low so that we can all enjoy the view without looking thru chain link and I'm sure that there is an assumption that people will realize that the fence is there to protect them from being too close to cliffs that are eroding. Common sense! I hope that they will both be okay.
