If they can't find their way out of Mission Canyon without the assistance of an 11 person Search and Rescue team, they should forget about hiking the John Muir trail.

If you go hiking then you should always take a backpack with a sweatshirt and granola bars & bottled water. If you get lost, determine which direction to by the movement of the sun. It is NOT hard to use common sense! And you can follow streams that run downhill because they will take you towards the ocean. It is unreal how many rescues there have been lately, I'm blown away. It's like these people think that they will suffer hypothermia with our mild evening temps!

Glad no one got hurt. It's amazing to think back that we climbed these hills and trails as 10 year old children and never got lost! But that was the day before helicopter parents and cell phones.

Common sense......hike early, take plenty of water and power bars, map and layers of clothing. Oh remember the "old fashioned" compass....buy one and learn how to use it AND stay on the trail.

@497P Yes, we did climb these hills all alone. And there are still bones out there from the many kids who never came back from those expeditions.

@504 ... many kids who never came back? Did you personally know even one child that never came back? I knew 2 who were lost at night and rescued. They were about 10 years old, and it had snowed. Never knew any that vanished.

If there was any public funds expended, those rescued should repay. Eg. cost of the helicopter and the non-volunteers. This sounds like the height of carelessness on the part of the hikers. The Sheriffs Department goes hat in hand to the supervisors begging for money. If these women are planning to hike the John Muir Trail later this summer, they obviously can afford to pay back what they've cost the taxpayers. Please follow-up on this: are they to be billed and if not, why not?

Thank Dog for the BEST Santa Barbara Sheriff Department, Search & Rescue Team ever! These amazing men and women are on call 24/7 risking their own lives to help in any situation. Please folks, learn our local hiking trails, as well as the risks of hiking during summer heat, as well as during winter storms.. And keep your dogs at home while getting lost. Thank you SAR!

It's been a few years since I hiked the front country trails but if their aim was Montecito Pk what were they doing on Tunnel trail? and how did they end up at 7 Falls in 9 hours? None of this makes any sense as the first trail marker to 7 Falls is one that runs in the opposite direction from their alleged destination. Were they blondes? This whole story smells of a classic "blondes joke". Perhaps it's the story they told SAR so as not to look like the total dingbats for 'shroomin' in the woods with no breadcrumb trail to lead them back out.

I'm so glad they hiked the trail, sometimes you have to do it in order to learn it and that goes particularly with hiking mountain trails. It can be a hard lesson or not. I'm very glad they are safe, any comments about their bill should be left to the hikers and the rescue services.

If you rear end a car by mistake and the police come out to take a statement do you get a bill for the time? How about if your fender bender causes a major traffic jam and the sheriff sends up a chopper to keep an eye on things, do you get a bill for that? Should you? What is the precedence we set if some actions require you to pay for civil service (that you already pay taxes for). People might not ask for help when needed if they fear they cant afford it. Who decides if your emergency was valid, or you are too "blond" and must get a bill. Lets all try something, think ... then type. Glad the girls are OK and that we have this great resource of VOLUNTEERS in town.

The comments never cease to amaze me. Show some empathy people. I seriously doubt any of these comments would have been written had the missing hikers been family members or friends. Sometimes people make mistakes and those mistakes or errors in judgment result in a call for help. As for Dillydally - not real happy about the blond comment.

Why is it okay to make slurs about blondes? Would you make a negative comment about their race? I don't think so.

I just started hiking as I get ready for a 2 week trip in Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. I have a free app, EveryTrail, that shows me the locat trails and allows me to track where I am in relation to the trail. I have never had a problem, even deep into our local trails, in getting reception. There are many apps like this.
