Probably obvious to a lot of people, but what types of snakes are those? Thanks!

The first one looks like it's coming out of a pipe.

The first two photos are of a gopher snake. The first one shows him molting his skin, probably just after waking up from hibernation, which explains why he looks so thin. He will now fatten up on some nice plump gophers.

Which pic shows a snake eating a lizard? I definitely don't see that, but I'd love to see it!

OP here, photos are of 1) gopher snake shedding its skin 2) baby gopher snake found at the house 3) striped racer or whipsnake eating a lizard 4) not sure, but guessing another whipsnake

We had a nice 4ft gopher snake show up in our back yard last weekend. I promptly poured him down one of our (many) active gopher holes. I hope he sticks around for a lot of smorgasbord.

Nice collection. Been a lot of snakes in the grass on the Mesa lately. Good job catching one in action.

Nice! I had a California King in my garden in Goleta today. :)

Don't have any gophers, but I wish there were snakes that would eat possoms. The dratted things have destroyed my lettuce plants ... and have started on the tomatoes. Anyone have any solutions for possom control; are there any snake rustlers in town?

This is the first year, in my 20 years in my house, that we have been inundated with gophers. It is so frustrating! I noticed in the past week that the activity has pretty much stopped. I hope that some nice gopher snake came and had a nice post hibernation meal. They are welcome in my yard anytime.

This seems bizarre, but in 16 years on the Mesa--with regular hiking and running--I have never ever seen any snake on the Mesa. Hoping this will be the year that changes.

There used to be numerous species of snakes of the DFP prior to the dog park. One notable specimen was a 6' California King Snake that popped up occasionally to devour numerous rodents. After the park was established, many of the raccoons, owls and snakes went elsewhere. Glad to see that some are still around.

Slightly to the right and slightly above the center of #3, you can see the snake's head just below the lizard's head, grasping the lizard's neck in its mouth.

number 4 is a striped racer (chaparral whipsnake). 539P, pretty unlikely that it's possums eating your veggies. they prefer roadkill and garbage or worms and the like. they eat fruit though.

Great shots--did you keep the shed snakeskin? Finding one as a kid was like finding treasure.

My first week living in the area (Goleta) a 5ft King snake slithered into my living room, noticed me, and retreated. It startled me and I was surprised to hear they aren't common in my neighborhood as the gardener in the complex has never seen one in his 4 years of employment.

Thanks 768, I'd never seen striped racers before after 20 years walking Wilcox, then 2 in one week! Maybe I'm just starting to notice them. Anywho, I love snakes and seeing these guys was awesome :)

717 - whatever it is in the backyard, digs in the pots (tomatoes, cukes) and in the raised beds (zucchini) and has eaten the lettuce; I assume it's possoms because I did last summer see them and I know that they are interested in worms. If it's not possoms, what would it be? There were rats and there still are a few, Lenz killed most, but I don't think they dig and also eat lettuce or do they? As for fruit, there is an apricot tree, dropping fruit.
