We've come a long way when tar balls make the news. It only seems like yesterday that Johnson's Baby Oil was a universal staple in most medicine cabinets for tar removal. Coming back from a beach walk with tar underfoot was a pretty common occurrence.

Stay away from the beaches! They are nasty, infested by tar and who knows what. They are for experts only. Stay away!

I was married on that beach. So sad the OIL CRIMINALS can get away with this. Hey, local officials why don't you tax these greedy bastards out of existance. Oil spills in the ocean are UNMANAGABLE. Is anyone watching to see if they are spraying that chemical crap on it to sink it to the bottom of the ocean. Our beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. Lets keep them that way goddamit!

Combining this story and the next one about the wild baby bird, you get the following two funny headlines: "U.S. Officials washed tar off an unknown number of balls in a parking lot up on Butterfly Beach, just south of Santa Barbara this week." "In Atascadero, another baby was found in the care of wild game, with no nest in site."

*Putting 2 and 2 together...* Oil leak last week, tar balls on beach. What else would it possibly be? Oil seepage is a normal occurrence, tons of oil being dumped into the ocean isn't. Oil drilling by any means is a volatile business, and with that comes huge risks if something goes wrong.

Not saying the tar balls and the recent spill aren't related but tar seeps are a fact of life here. Coal Oil Point, Hendry's and Carp State Beach show many signs of it coming out of the cliffside rocks. Can't blame it all on the oil companies. The Chumash used the tar to make their tomols watertight and even traded the stuff.... they were the original oil barons of the central coast.

291628 - Is this a real comment? How can anyone be that naive to have had a wedding on a beach here but not know that tar is a naturally occurring event in our area... astounding ignorance is a foot folks...

Does anyone know if it would be unusual for oil from a spill on Friday to turn into tar balls that quick. The ones on the news also looked more weathered than fresh. I'm glad they took samples so they assign blame if justified having grown up here not just "married" on a local beach there have been years they are frequent, others not so much for tar on the beaches. Plus when you look at the fact the Coal Oil Point seeps release 4 to 6 times the amount they say spilled off the platform every single day. Fish and Game will have a answer and then if Pacific Operators IS at fault they will be paying some more fines than they are facing now.

So we're supposed to believe this is natural seepage despite the fact that seepage is typically mild this time of year and there's been a recent oil spill in Carpinteria? Please.

this is 628 here. I have lived in town for 11 years now and I am a local. I frequent that beach and have for a long time; fishing, scuba diving and taking my son to the beach to that beach to play. I stand by my statement that " OIL SPILLS IN THE OCEAN ARE UNMANAGABLE!" PS alot of the seepage is from wells dated to the early 1900's that were never properly plugged. Naive...You are naive to think OIL is not destructive to our environment!

Well this is the longest I have lived in any one place in my life, I was married here and my son was born here. Just my opinion but i'm a local. With the way people move away all the time because of how $$$ it is, I thought you were a local after 3 years. That is what a local told me. Oh yeah and he was born here...
