Looks like a Western Tiger Swallowtail to me. I've been seeing lots of butterflies at my place--must be the right time. I've had Blues, Sulphers and Painted Ladies. Butterfly watching is so much fun. If you can't travel around to see things, why not look more closely at what's in your own backyard?

Definitely Western Swallowtail (Papillo rutulus). Adults fly March through September. Host plants are willows and alders. These Westerns are found throughout California and Western North America.

Haven't seen many of these in last few years. The most common sulfur (correct spelling) is the "Cloudless" sulfur. That's the large yellow butterfly seen in our gardens now.

Don't think it's a Western Tiger Swallowtail due to the pointed tips. Probably something else, but not sure. Check with the folks at the Natural History Museum as they have peeps who probably know-know.

Link

Official bufferfly site with a number of images that can be clicked to magnify and compare. I would say that it does look like a Western Tiger Swallowtail.

I don't know to what the "pointed tips" was referring - the tail, the edging?

Looks like an Anise Swallowtail to me. My wife and I have raised lots of these.

Monarchs are orange and black---you really need to get out to the Butterfly Refuge in Goleta around Christmas time if you don't know what a Monarch looks like!

Actually the correct spelling is Sulphur. Want to split the difference?

It is definitely a western tiger swallowtail, Papilio rutulus. It could possibly be confused with the pale swallowtail, Papilio eurymedon, which is also found locally, but that has a pale, creamy ground color, while the tiger has a brighter yellow color. Males and females look slightly different
