SB's favorite inside sport: stick it to the Man. Beats working to create one's own personal wealth. Class envy has now replaced upward mobility as the work ethic for at least a generation. The generation sitting around waiting to harvest mommy and daddy's accumulated wealth, while slacking off their own lives.

If he doesn't ruin it with some stupid golf course, I guess I don't have a problem with it. Should still belong to the Hawaiian people though.

I have nothing against someone who wants to build great personal fortune, and a successful company. Something about this purchase seems a little wrong to me however. Lanai is such a special place, it should almost be a national park. I suppose it depends on what he actually does with it. If he closes the island and makes it his own personal yacht club, that seems really wrong. If the island remains open than all is well. But buying such a large part of one US state seems askew. Let's see what he does with the island.

That island was mostly a pineapple and sugar cane plantation in the days before those crops started to lose money. That's why it's never been a big tourist destination because it isn't very interesting to see old plantation fields and refineries. Last time I looked there was only 1 or 2 hotels there. No good beaches that I know of. Maybe he will turn out to be a good steward of the land and rehabilitate it into the tropical paradise that it was before they plowed it under. Niihau is also privately owned and has never been developed because of it. It is one of the few places where the Hawaiian language and culture has survived. Almost no place else in the islands is that true. I was shocked a few years ago when I went to Tahiti and heard Tahitian being spoken- I had never heard Hawaiian spoken in public when I lived in the islands.

if you want relatively unscathed polynesia, head further south to samoa... the samoans hold tight to their culture...and the beaches and lagoons are still unspoilt. cant get upset with larry. he's bringing the america's cup races to esseff.

Back when I first moved to Santa Barbara, and I was completely flat broke, I heard of Oracle and read that I should buy stock. Sucks to be flat broke with a hot tip. :-) Can we buy stock in the island, do you think? Maybe that would be a better investment than my kids' paltry college savings account... As for the snarky comments - I think it's just really hard for anyone who can't afford to buy their own island to swallow that someone is out there buying their own island. It's like instant mid-life crisis material.

As one who is usually seated at the Snark Table here, I just want to say that I wish him well, as I do the "Peoples" of Hawaii (all flavors including white), and all who are able to cast an eye on Lanai from local residents to Google Earthers. Nature bats last.

Why not the same "down with the deal" position to those who sold him the private land. Why no comment on their "greedyness?" A lot of liberals are actually fairly conservative. Who among us have the multi skills that it takes to do what this guy did. I could not get any neighbor to invest 1000 bucks into a venture, but others can. Why so much negativity? Plus people clamor (obviously) for his products. The pose is.............looking down at your cell phone. Well some people make money off that. Sorry, but he is to be congratulated. Plus from what I have read, not a bad guy, not using his position to cover for his friends like Obama for Holder. That's sick and the obvious demise of a second term. Weird the disconnect.

290277 - this has nothing to do with Obama and Holder, and it is obvious very little is known about Fast and Furious. F &F was started by GWB and stopped by Holder. Obama has exerted executive privilege to protect confidential documents that by law must not be disclosed - much like client/attorney. Read about GWB's SIX executive privileges here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_privilege
