Are you sure it isn't being confused with the debris coming over from Japan???

This is a poor reflection of UCSB students; does this happen at other college campuses?

@230P It happens everywhere...we just notice it in this case because: #1. IV's landlords force everyone to move out at the same time, overwhelming the normal trash disposal system. #2. It makes the over 90 crowd feel better about themselves to think that "I was never like those young whipper-snappers."

It's pretty sad that they do that! Many IV students are from out of town and they are spoiled rich kids that have mommy and daddy paying their way, they are the ones that do this, not the hardworking students that are putting themselves through school, they hang onto their stuff because they had to work for it and pay for it themselves!

Well, I'm not over 90 (yet!) but I sure knew better than to throw a piece of furniture over a cliff onto a beach when I was....well, as far back as I can remember. A 12 year old child knows not to do that, let alone a college student. Please don't make excuses for this kind of awful behavior.

I think "spoiled rich kids" is indeed the operative descriptor here. Is using Craig's List to announce "free" furniture or donating to a local thrift store too much work for these students? UCSB could designate an empty parking lot for collection of all this stuff and call it a "free" swap meet. I just think there are alternatives to throwing their stuff over the cliff into the ocean, don't you?

The excuse about the landlords making them move is just that, an excuse. Do you really think that the parents would like to return a week after graduation to pick the students up? And would they do anything different with their stuff? Did they not know when the end of the school year was? The trash companies have done a great job roaming the streets with trucks picking up load after load free of charge. The big problem is the kids see all their stuff as old and junk, since they will get brand new next fall when mom and dad drop them off again. The dollar value of items dumped in the trash that are brand new is amazing. And yes I have cleaned up after them and written their leases.

There is a donation location with a two day garage sale benefiting local charities. A two-day sale of items donated by UC Santa Barbara students will be held June 19-20, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the parking lot of UCSB's Embarcadero Hall at 935 Embarcadero del Norte in Isla Vista. The sale is sponsored by GIVE, a UCSB project developed to encourage students to donate their unwanted items rather than discard them.

-255, UCSB does offer a collection site for unwanted items and does offer a sale. See comment -262. UCSB has done this for years. Sadly, rather than donate their unwanted items, many of the self-entitled rich kids in IV see it as more fun, fitting and proper to drag their couches into the street, set fire to them, get drunk and do dumb stuff like getting a running start and leaping over the burning couch to the roars of other drunken partygoers for the thrill of it. It's not surprising that some of the debris ends up in the ocean. I guess it's fun to trash the place where you live.

234: I'm 22, in college, and think this is pretty unsavory. Whether or not everyone is "kicked out" on the same weekend, they all have prior notice. Take care of your affairs beforehand if you don't feel like doing it the last weekend.

234: This doesn't happen everywhere. I went to a very large state school (not in CA), and when everyone moved, you simply took your items you didn't want to the curb and someone who wanted them came and took them or they got hauled away by the garbage truck. I don't think the vast majority of college students, or even UCSB students, behave in this manner. No wonder people feel disdainful toward IV and college students in general though.

Like 310, I went to a large state school (not in CA) and there were no incidents like what takes place in IV. Burning couches and littering the ocean with unwanted furniture is ridiculous. I'm sure that not every UCSB student does this, but the few that do make all of the students look bad.

Again a group of resondents falling hype to KEYT's boreing and loathsome reporting system that is the worst news program on the central coast. Nothing but low budget muck rakers trying to create a story from mud. If any of you fear mongers want to see trash, just walk down to ANY beach right now. You'll find every plastic, rope, string, wire and burnt log in the book. It is not I.V.s problem nor is it related to "rich kids". It's epidemic.

I own several rental properties in IV. First, my tenants are on a 9 month lease with me. They go month-to-month after that. All they need to do is give 30 days notice. I know 4 other property owners there and none of us enforce a mandatory move-out date. Second, I interview every tenant - most of them are decent folks who respect the property. The key here is to not allow subletting - if someone moves out, I have to approve the replacement tenant. I've had minimal issues and I can positively tell you that none of my tenants ever threw furniture into the ocean. Also, I've rented to all types - wealthy does not equal disrespectful behavior - it's a common misconception. These kids will face far bigger challenges than trashing IV - good thing that most of them know that.

9234, your attitude towards this waste and callous disregard for the environment and neighborhood, is distressing at a minimum. As one who enrolled at UCSB the same month as the burning of the Bank of America, and the local "Martial Law" brought on by the SBSO calling in the Los Angeles County Sheriffs, I was witness to some pretty anarchic, violent, turbulent goings on from 1970-74. I'll never forget the vilification we suffered as part of "them dirty hippy stoonts" from the "America: Love it or Leave it" crowd. The kind of trashing that these IV residents have done, would have been considered totally unacceptable behavior, and environmentally irresponsible by my generation of students, and by ANY objective standard, no matter what one's age, it is just as unacceptable in 2012 as it was 40 years ago. Don't make excuses for humans who turn their neighborhood into a pig sty.

The vast majority of UC Santa Barbara students are responsible, generous and environmentally-aware! The GIVE project, in its 22nd year, accepts donations of thousands of items donated by students during move-out on campus and in Isla Vista (clothing, shoes, household items, books, couches(!), tables, etc.) The GIVE sale, Sat. June 23 and Sun. June 24 from 8 AM-4 PM, 935 Embarcadero del Norte in Isla Vista, and 100% of proceeds benefit Isla Visa community non-profits and projects. It's a win-win solution to this hectic time of year. www.giveiv.org
