How is it possible that this "site" was previously unknown?..I did`nt think so either..Why are there still artifacts under these grounds?...These should have been removed before consruction. Now,an "anonymous museum curator" will get ahold of them & they`ll never be seen again. Something`s not right in this scenario...

Thanks so much to person who posted this. I tuned in to news at 11pm, but barely caught tail end of this story (distractions). Wondered where this "hidden" site was. Thanks again.

108...as a Chumash Native of the Coastal band, I agree [lol]....it probably is an ancient slot machine invented by us[see Antikythera device],since our basketry is the finest, our tomols are the best, our astrological knowledge was only eclipsed[get it?] by the Mayan`s & our knowledge of medicine was amongst the most effective in No. America...but the invention of this infernal machine posed too great an obstacle for our use because...How do you get a string of beads down the coin-slot?...Yeah,you can use that one at the next wine-tasting,go ahead.

Sad that these remains cannot rest unmolested.

I agree with 220....but mankind cannot leave anything unmolested. Everything must be boxed & numbered,& if possible, exploited for every ounce of nutrition.

It IS a well known site, one of the largest prehistoric sites in Santa Barbara. Most of it has been excavated in the past. I was one of the archaeologists on this dig. It was being done because they plan on putting an elevator here and it was a cultural resource management (CRM) job to find out if there was anything there, and if so to rescue it. What ends up in the lab (usually just bits of shell and bone, sometimes beads) is studied so that we can look at things like the age and length of occupation, the diet etc. California archaeology is no longer about "treasure" to be put into museums. Those are the days of old before NAGPRA when unfortunately people wanted to dig up graves more than anything else.
