According to the CHP website, there was an accident about 20 minutes ago on 101 southbound at the Mission St onramp. Maybe that's the reason.

Drivers get absolutely stupid near the Las Positas N/B onramp. If people would realize that that onramp is the longest, easiest ramp to get up to freeway speed on and DIDN'T brake in the slow lane AND the middle lane every time they spot a car getting on, there'd never be a problem. So annoying. Check it out literally anytime, drivers are always braking there and causing a problem.

@958 nailed it. Cars are stuffed to the gills, and U-Haul vans, trucks, and trailers abound. Friday and Saturday will be a nightmare.

And Mission off-ramp has been closed, so some of those drivers realize they should rush off at Las Positas.

I received a call from the City of Goleta a couple of days ago waring about the traffic nightmare to come this weekend. The 217 towards UCSB is only one lane due to construction. It will be backed up on the 101 for sure Saturday and Sunday.

More lanes = more cars! Be careful what you wish for with the 101.

287991 - Your logic (and everyone else who says "More lanes = More cars") is SO stupid I don't know where to begin. Oh I know, I'll use your logic and go out and buy a bigger wallet. Then I'll be rich.

@287991 You're absolutely right. Not to mention more noise and filth in the air. Love those gorgeous sound walls, too. Widening freeways only encourages more car travel and higher speeds. Above snide commentaries not from SB locals. It's the "it's still better than L.A." crowd.

7996... if you can't be civil would you be kind enough to keep your nastiness to yourself? That is if "civil" and "kind" are concepts you can even grasp.

My daughter lived in the Bay Area; big to-do about widening (or not) a freeway. When it was finished and opened, it was bumper to bumper from the very 1st day.

From an engineer's perspective, more lanes does not equal more cars. However, if demand already exceeds existing supply, adding a lane may not always result in more freely flowing traffic. Santa Barbara is no L.A. or Bay Area, where demand already outstrips supply. If anyone happened to crack open the EIR, they'd know that. So long as growth in Santa Barbara is kept at a minimum by, and property rights are ignored, we should have no problems. Also, with regard to the argument about pollution, a car idling and at rest pollutes more than a car in motion. So long as the theory that more lanes = more cars is thrown out, there will be less pollution.
