Thanks John. I had been watching the tracker hoping it would come down the channel, but it wasn't to be. Thanks for letting us get a peek at the journey south!

Almost all of the WWII fit of AAA (Anti-Aircraft Artillery), and there was a lot, was removed in the latest modernization. Not much good against modern aircraft. There would have been escorts with long-range air defenses, and last-ditch measures on Iowa like Stinger missiles and Phalanx guns. The light-gray rectangular boxes you can see are for Tomahawks and Harpoons for land attack and anti-ship. Not as visible are the electronic countermeasures and decoys.

Glad to see that others are enjoying this view too. Sure was fun to be there! Will be interesting to tour Iowa in LA, because the wiki sez she's being kept ready for active duty by agreement with the Navy. We did have trouble spotting her in today's haze (too far from shore in yesterday's better weather), but the Warrior's massive wake finally gave them away. Iowa steaming along at 30kt would have made a wake much easier to spot! Taking that overhead shot I imagined it being the last thing an enemy pilot would see before all the AAC guns opened up. I've put larger versions on my Photo Page.

Thank you for these photos and the story. I will definitely have to go see this latest floating museum when it opens. I've been on the Queen Mary, the old Russian sub beside her, and even an active nuclear sub (the USS Topeka), but I've never been on a battleship. Yet.

Really great pictures. Thanks! I am wondering if you had as much trouble finding the Iowa as a Japanese aviator would have experienced 60-plus years ago in another part of the Pacific?

Cool shots John. Thanks for that. About 25 years ago when I lived in NYC, they had a massive July 4th celebration and I went down to the water to see the massive USS Iowa when she was still in service. It was a very cool sight.

Thanks John, been waiting for you to post. I figured you would go up and take some pics. The Warrior seems like a mighty machine too.
