I used to work at Montecito Shores many years ago. I have a very intresting rock you guys should see sometime. It was found about 50 or so feet up a dranage pipe back in 83 during the storms.. All the things that went on there no wonder the place is so haunted..Great story as usual Thank You..

Very Cool! before sea meadow was built we built a half pipe in the meadow. Spent many hours skating and hanging with friends. We called ourselves Cito Rats. Still some of my friends living that lifestyle now in our 40's. There is a native indian who comes every year to do a ceremony in the meadow. He swings this flat board at the end of string that looks like leather and it makes a very wierd noise. He does it for several hours and is just dripping in sweat. He did not have nice things to say about the people living in the Sea meadow developement but said it eloquently. I have two friends who live in there and they have spirit stories. Lakey is still in her youth. The Bennet brothers, Tom Curren, Dana M, The Smali Bros and Ron the enforcer were some of the 70 and 80 locals.

@749 - and please don't forget my "baby brother" Jason Sears in your list of notable Cito Rats...we know Lakey's still just a kid, and were just being "clever"...So glad you appreciated the history. It was fun doing the research on an area that's always been such a big part of our lives in SB.

Great history, and correctly done. The Hammonds were great friends and Seth and Susie still are. John Wiley might like to know, the 1st time I went up in a plane was off the lawn at Bonnymede. George Hammond was taking his daughter Susie and me to Long Beach, 1951.

The remnants of the pier were blown up for the filming of a movie. Don't remember the exact date, a search of News Press archives would fill in the story though.

In the late 40s and through the 50s my cousins lived on Humphrey Road, which backs up to Montecito Creek and the old Hammond property. One of the Hammond grandsons (George Jr.) was about our age and friends with my cousin. I remember the bowling alley next to the creek close to the beach and countless times on that wonderful beach. My uncle loved to fish and sometimes would stay out all night surf fishing. Once my cousin and I were 14 or so and had been swimming in the ocean near the Coral Casino. It was a bit of a trek back to his place, even cutting across the Hammond property (which was OK with them). Mr. Hammond had gone up in his plane and left his old Ford pick-up parked next to the airplane hangar with the keys in the ignition. We jumped in and drove the pick-up closer to our destination. Sorry I never had a chance to apologize to Mr. Hammond, who was in for a surprise when he landed and found his pick-up missing.

I still live in the neighborhood but don't walk the "railroad" path very much any more. I did a lot of exploring on the Hammon property when I was young. I think at one time college kids lived in the old house.

Spear head a botanic restoration, eh? Where are the Coastal Chumash people on this idea I wonder? I'd like to do this. I was there today and quite literally stepped into a gopher hole to my knees. These subterranean natives are significant. BUT, I was able to get those Matilija Poppies on the corner of San Ysidro and N. Jameson going and they're doing fine. I may just do that.

Shalawa meadow has been beautified in the past & contains 2 large stone circles for ceremony. There were also 3 prayer-poles placed in the meadow, but 2 were stolen & one was vandalized along with the memorial at the entrance. I would love to see [be involved] another restoration, but fear more destruction...what can we do to protect a "new" Shalawa & not promote a new "party place"?...If we can figure that out, I`m all in!.

In your description of the three residential communities that have been built on the Hammonds' property, you have mixed up the names. Bonnymede is the community closest to the Coral Casino and Olive Mill Road. Moving west along the coast, Montecito Shores is adjacent to Bonnymede, followed by Sea Meadow which ends at Eucalyptus Lane.
