Hopefully, it WAS used by the ancient Chumash for ceremony [we did`nt live in caves tribaly] & it`s full of ancient artifacts, shamanic medicine etc...that way, hikers can go there & vandalize the place beyond recognition & take our artifacts...never to be seen again & sold on the black market. Thanks for the gps.

444...do you mean take MY post [431] down? why?..true is true. 461...the name is Psycho! & I`ll tell Edhatters something else...Look at SB,at her illnessess...& tell me nothing`s wrong? The reason she is sick is because Western amer. has never listened to the Natives..they still don`t,& soon it will be too late [if not already]. There`s a reason things were put in place BEFORE the arrival of Europeans & they need to stay that way. SB is powerful & should be preserved, not disassembled.

There's an informal agreement that rock art sites and other archaeological sites aren't publicly shared because of vandalism risks. That's unfair to those who are curious and respectful, but it's the decision the archaeological community has made.

There are so many wind & water caves in California sandstone hills that many, many of them that would seem to be promising rock art sites, are not rock art or significant archaeological sites. It may be just another cool cave.

There are "New Age Native Americans" (my derisive term for those who dubiously claim heritage, knowledge, and rights) who think anyone other than them shouldn't know anything, go anywhere, grow anything, or even exist, because we're invading their homeland. Selective history and an exclusive mentality doesn't engender respect.

I saw this photo first thing this morning before any posts. My thoughts were similar to 431. This is like flying over someone's home and posting photos because it's interesting. Let hikers that have pure interests find sites for themselves; please don't post on the internet for all to see and destroy. The kids at the Tea Gardens years ago show the mentality of many of today's youth- "seek out cool spots for parties- to hell with stewardship."

Chumash holy man 431 & others, are correct. Also,Shaman from around the world used to come here to share with each-other in old times. There remains, the power of ceremony, good & bad. When one touches these areas [not to say this cave is one,but in general] it tells the Spirits that one is accepting responsibility to carry the ceremonial essence to fruition..good & bad, life or death. I have seen many who have fallen this way[Travis Hudson for one]. A medicine man once told me,"You can crack the planet in two [literally] if you play with Chumash medicine...all tribes know this, now you do too. Thank you to all who`ve posted...Kwil`me`yay,to be on the "Right track".

It is very unlikely that that cave was used by humans. It is just too difficult to get to. All of the known sites of cave paintings were / are easily to climb in to.

All local rock art sites have three things in common; sandstone rock formation, nearby oak trees, nearby water source. This location doesn't appear to have a nearby water source so it is unlikely to contain rock art. As already mentioned, it also looks very difficult to get to. I'd say 95% sure that it's unlikely that it was used by native people and there is no rock art inside.

I have to agree with 2431 on this one.... it's bad enough that hoardes of irreverent city slickers, with their accompaniment of taggers and partiers, get out to our natural beauty-scape but to invite people off the beaten track with aerial photos is irresponsible.

Please keep our pristine areas pristine and don't show every Tom, Dick or Harry where to go to make them less so.

2444.... an opinion opposite your own should be a golden nugget and meriting the same consideration as your own, in a democracy.

please take this down. I have been to a chumash cave with 40' long red and black paintings North of here. That image my friend and I will always hold in our hearts because of how big the cave was and the lack of human defacement. That was 35 years ago. We can't use the internet to show the world hidden caves and potential archaeologic sites. Hurray for poison oak. Respect all whereabouts to sensitive spiritual centers.

My family maps show over 300 Chumash ceremonial caves in many various locations...most I`ve been to & some not yet. They do not all have the "expectations" of sandstone, water availability & ease of access as previously suggested. Some are only accessable by rope, & some are no longer accessable because of errosion. Some have water [birthing caves] & some not. Some are painted, some not. The one`s that are too exposed to travelers have been relieved of artifacts to protect them[the artifacts, not the travelers]. I wish I could share more with pics & such, but I get attacked[media, ucsb, museum, collectors] every time..
