Great story and research. I'm endlessly fascinated by things like this. I wonder, does the shape and weight distribution of each seed contribute to it's success in "flying" down to earth?

Amazing, good story about brothers and lazy summer days. Near before heard of "Helicopter" seeds, learn something new every day. David, fantastic pictures in Carpinteria Magazine!!!

Very warm and interesting account which you have shared with us. The shot of the leaf in profile suggests that the seed pods themselves are shaped like airplane wings--but then one is higher and one lower, perhaps that induces rotation.

Interesting to learn they are helicopter seeds. As a kid growing up on a maple-lined street we used to pick the leaves and separate them at the stem end (where it's sticky) then attach eaxh half to the end of our noses upside down, and call them polly noses. They do, in fact, look a litttle like a parrot's beak that way.
