Note the banded or striped tail. That's a bobcat. It does have quite long tufts though. One place that I've found useful is the How stuff works ironically!

I was trying to find a good wildcat reference online, but I couldn't find any lynx.

Lynx canadensis is known as a Canada lynx or just lynx, Lynx rufus is known as a bobcat. Just because something is a member of the Lynx genus doesn't mean it's a lynx.

I have seen many over the years but then we live in the foothills. Looked out the den window one day and saw a large male bobcat standing by the pool. Also saw a mountain lion one morning early near the entrance to a trail leading to and from Tuckers Grove. Many do not realize that we are at the urban boundary with a wilderness (Los Padres National Forrest)

I've lived in SB all my life and never seen a bobcat till this year. In this month alone I've seen THREE! Two up at Figueroa Mtn and one this morning on Patterson Ave.

Occasionally, while different species, a lynx and bobcat will breed and the hybrid offspring is called a "blynxs"! Beautify photos!

Oooooo..... glad s/he decided to parade for you in such good light! Sounds like you're in my neck of the woods and I've been graced numerous times by such visits. Methinks that those who insist a bobcat is closer to a puma or mountain lion don't realise that it's named after its bobbed, or chopped, tail. And although these kitties are quite big compared to the more domesticated kind they are rather scrawny next to a mountain lion. Glad you finally got a few snaps.

Bobkitty! I saw two up on East Camino Cielo during the last rains. One was chasing a rabbit, the other was poised on a rock. Cute little bobkitty!

Where approximately do you live? I saw one in a friend's backyard two weeks ago in Santa Ynez (by the Bridlewood Winery). Looked a lot like this and didn't seem to mind us at all. Cool.

Bobcats are in the genus Lynx (along with the Canada lynx, Eurasian lynx, and Iberian lynx), but they definitely shouldn't be called "a lynx." In the Americas, "a lynx" refers to the Canada lynx. The Canada lynx is dependent on snowshoe hares and only lives in areas with significant amounts of snow, whereas bobcats eat many types of rabbits and rodents and can live in a wide variety of habitats. There are no natural populations of lynx in California. Lynx have MUCH bigger paws, longer ear tufts, and their tails have a black tip. They're generally larger and furrier, with fewer spots, though bobcats also get larger and furrier in colder areas.

Gorgeous! Such great creatures. I have seen them in our local hills as well as at Lake Los Carneros. Usually early am or early evening.

Lucky you! Love the shots, and the appreciation of this beautiful cat. I think that a bobcat is a lynx, but a lynx may not necessarily be a bobcat. (Kind of like a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't necessarily a square.)

It's a Lynx, but it's also a Bobcat - Like I drive a car, but I also call it a Dodge. Bobcat is part of the species of Lynx. Fantastic picture, thanks for posting - keep your pets inside, this guy is looking for snacks.
